Doesn't work. It appears to work initially (albeit a veeery low-resolution icon), but as soon as you click the bookmark, the icon resets :(

This Bookmark Favicon Changer does its job but it has many glitches the loading bar that is supposed to show you how more long the process is going to take doesn't work and there seems to be a error popping up saying some error but it works

Excellent, simple and intuitive. Works as advertised on Google Chrome Version 103.0.5060.114 (Official Build) (64-bit). Big + is that you can upload any image instead of favicon.ico without cropping or resizing. Kudos to developers!

No longer functions. Icons reset every time you restart your computer. Worked great for years, but now it's time to find something new.

I could not get this to work, but I do not know why. I had a site bookmarked and open. I clicked on this extension and then chose Change Favicon, selected an image, and opened it. The icon on the tab changed, but not the one on the bookmarks bar. When I clicked on the bookmark In the bookmarks bar, the icon reverted to the previous one. I tried another favicon changer, and it was very straightforward, beginning with browse for an image. I would give this one star, but I suspect that I was doing something wrong. Having said that, I used an obvious navigation in the extension and nothing happened.

Does not work bookmarklet. The shortcut thing seems like a good idea. But the popup is blocked by Chrome, and there is no way to override that.

Works as advertised but you cannot use it for Folders. Which is what I wanted it for. I am so sick of those yellow folders. I will have to find an extension for that. It's still cool to change your icons though.

Alexis McDonald September 15th, 2020

The quality of favicons are always so low, and pixelated. Do yourself a favor, and download the other favicon changer extension chrome has to offer (called "favicon changer"). I WILL say that my issue with that one is that for some reason, on one specific bookmark, clicking on its favicon makes the image/favicon disappear from the bookmark and tab- but then clicking again refreshes and restores it. It's a bit annoying, but at least your favicons look somewhat more crisp all the time, and one extra click is hardly as troublesome as constantly having pixelated icons.

Waste of time! It doesn't work! I followed all the steps and when I clic the icon, it reverts to the original one.

I got this to add a favicon to a bookmarklet but the option is greyed out and doesn't provide a reason why. None of these extensions I've tried seem to be able to do it, so I suspect it's an issue with chrome not allowing it, but at the very least an error or info message should have been shown.

Works, for a bit. Doesn't allow you to change favicon of non http: (read javascript: bookmarklets) and if you do change it of one it will let you change, it'll go back to the site default when you click on it! UI is confusing also.

Not sure what others have against it in order to rate it so low, but I can confirm it appears to be working flawlessly on the latest version of Chrome as of June 26th, 2018 (Windows 10 x64 v1803). Thank you to the developer of this valued extension. As a former Firefox user, 'Bookmark Favicon Changer' was on my list of essential addons. Cheers :-)

Keivan Shalileh June 10th, 2018

It works very well. You just need a PNG file and you can easily change the icon for those iconless pages. I have many pages in my bookmarks bar, so this will help me avoid putting names for them and just find them by the icon.

Chuck Hildebrandt May 1st, 2018
Chuck Hildebrandt

I used to use this for years and it worked great, but now it's terrible. It took me 19 hours to get favicons for 90% of my bookmarks, until it crapped out on me. I went to save the favicon database and that didn't. It said i needed at least version 2.00. I have version 2.21. It also kicked me off my VPN, which is a huge no-no. I have favicons now, but at some point Chrome will wipe them all out when i close it out and i will be back at square one. It sucks because, like I say, it worked great for years. And now it doesn't work well at all. And the thing has not been supported in four years. YMMV, buy caveat emptor on this.

Doesn't do what I wanted. I wanted to be able to change the folder icon (on a folder of bookmarks on my Chrome Bookmarks bar) to a favicon, instead.

Brandon Justice March 8th, 2018

Excellent, simple and intuitive. Works as advertised, no issues getting a favicon changed my first go around. To Developer: Only issue I had was the amount of time that lapses when I go to exit the tab from the settings (any w/ extension) page(s). I will try to change network error lapse time to 0 or a few seconds and see if that doesn't help it but I will update you either way. Update: Reset network error time lapse down to 1 second and still having same issue of long delay (I counted 10 seconds) on tab exit. Please advise when you can. Thanks!

Very non-intuitive; "Help" feature should be renamed "Help - we don't speak English!" Big fail!

Daniel Saner February 5th, 2018

Works as advertised! Great to get some visual sense into your bookmarks toolbar. I use this with the Vivaldi browser, and it works fine. Needs to be used in quite a roundabout way: changing icons is only possible from the extension's settings page, it opens a pop-up to perform the change, which seems to not work and have to be closed manually, but ends up working, although showing the new icon in the main browser window requires re-opening it. But we all know that all of these problems are due to Chrome's ridiculously bad and inadequate extensions structure. The problems of this extension are all Google's faults, and my thanks are to the developer for finding and implementing the ugly hacks required to still make it work :)

Peter Schaefer January 4th, 2018

I use it to Reset Favicons. I have really many bookmarks and syncronize them across machines and browsers with Xmarks. Unfortunately it happens that they get corrupted. Then the safest way is completely downloading them from Xmarks. But after that all favicons are gone. So, I need a tool like the Favicon Changer. But instead of going manually to each folder, mark all resettable, request reset for them and confirm this, there should be a way to recursively scroll through all bookmark folders and reset all resettable, or even better all blank ones which are resettable. DEAR DEVELOPER, PLEASE DO US A FAVOR!

Downloaded it to add change icons on some bookmarklets. WON'T DO THAT! You must apparently be on a tab to change a favicon for it. Had no need to do that, didn't try any other feature. What it NEEDS to do is be able to right-click on a bookmark, with "Change/Remove Favicon" added to the context menu. Useless, deleting.

So far, it just does what I wanted it to do--lets me choose an icon from my own picture files, and then displays it on the tab and the bookmark bar. I can't believe Google has never fixed this in-house on Chrome, but at least this extension works.

Only works for bookmarks going to http pages. I have several that point to "javascript:window.open('URL');" so the bookmark will open in a new tab when just left clicked. I wanted to change the icon for these but can't. Also the managing page looks like some website from 1995.

I also would love to see the ability to change a folder on my bookmark toolbar to an icon. I was able to do this in FF via a workaround that allowed me to export an icon and then right click on the bookmarked folder and change favicon. Maybe?

Evan Tollios August 1st, 2014
Evan Tollios

I love how well this works. I only wish it allowed us to change the icon to a folder within our bookmarks. As it is, it only changes the tab icon and the actual bookmark icon. A folder just gets a plain folder. If you have a couple folders set to be accessed on the bookmark bar, and if you have "hide bookmark names" selected in this extension's options, then there are multiple folders with no way to indicate what's in them. Hovering over each one does not show the name of the folder the same way hovering over a bookmark icon shows the name of the bookmark. Instead, you actually have to click on each folder to see which one has the bookmarks your looking for. I still rate this 5 stars because it successfully does what it claimed to do and it does it very well.

Ah, sadly, it's not nearly as good as the now-deceased Firefox version. I often import bookmarks and bookmarklets from html files or Firefox, and for some reason many of those bookmarks/bookmarklets cannot have the icon changed, but only exported. Apparently there is some sort "reset-able" attribute that prevents the icon from being changed. This is true even for bookmarks that have an icon that came from an icon file (.ico, on Windows) that was base64-encoded (and therefore are ALWAYS changeable, FYI). Also, the Shortcut feature doesn't work when I use javascript to create a bookmarklet. So, it doesn't really work just like a bookmark as the information says. I never had these issues with the Firefox version. Anything that could be created as a bookmark could be iconized by this extension. Not so in Chrome. So, it is of some use for me, and is quite convenient when it works, but overall I'm somewhat disappointed.

Mark July 19th, 2013
Mark

One of the reasons I moved from FF to Chrome was because the developer stopped work on his Firefox add-on (because of Mozilla's constant moving of the goalposts) and developed this one, and I'm happy to say this is just as good, if not better, than the Firefox version.

Works well. I like that I'm able to hide the titles of bookmarks but it would be great if you could selectively hide rather than hide all. I have some folders which I'm not able to see titles of now
