problem, extension causes chroma problem aka kills chroma in chrome browser for most of 2022. had to turn them off one at a time to pinpoint the violating extension. i'm logging this to help coders figure out why and fix in an update. changed the "Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit" setting from 'all sites' default to 'on click' to fix the problem, but now have to ask how i get your ext to do it's thing.

Thank you Omarrrr! My man! Now I don't have to figure out where the "x" button is on an annoying ad and am not distracted with those attention whoring ads. Plus, it is so easy to read text now! Amazing!

Currently using Version 104.0.5112.102 (Official Build) (64-bit) and this did not work at all. Made photos black and white, but they were still there.

This is a joke right? according to dev tools, data transferred over network is higher when applying this extension or the difference is tiny, I tried it on several pages including Facebook and tested in incognito mode and repeated the test several times with each mode, for saving bandwidth this tool is waste of bandwidth.

Any keyboard shortcut to switch between modes? Is it possible to define a list of websites as extensions? Also, it blocks Mendeley Extension!

I really like that it maintains the page formatting. However, I'd like the ability to display blocked items on demand.

Have it turn on/off per tab and it will be perfect. Usually I browse pretty light but want to toggle images off in a specifically hectic site, while I still want to see the images in the other one.

Great extension. I use it for a more relaxed reading experience. In the future, I would love to see more customization options, like font color, image transparency.

This works really well-- there are some sites that dont work, but by in large it does a great job. Some feature enhancements needed: * Selectively go into text mode by tab * Ability to hover or click on blocked image to see what image is being shown if you are curious * Remove image placeholders entirely (though this might leave page rendering difficult) Overall just what I needed!

Love, love, love. You can block pictures of politicians. AND toggle it on before you open your web based email (Gmail) to prevent image embedded read receipts and trackers.

A great extension for when on a limited data plan. Feature request: ability to click to load a specific image. Perhaps you could add a context menu item on a per-image basis that would allow one to load an image on demand; if needed.

Works Great. I found a workaround to enable the text only mode for specific Window. I use two google accounts one window i use the account that has TextOnly mode extension and enable it there. If I want to see images for the same website then i will launch the same site in the other window. (Swich Person option Chrome is the way to go!)

Hides chaos and gives webpages a clean, minimalist appearance. I would prefer chaotic, colorful, high-bandwidth elements to never be loaded to begin with, but that would be too much to ask for.

As I just installed this it's soon to rate so gave middling 3 stars as a default Just wanted to point out that as of 03/19/2015 some criticism and requests seem to have been addressed. It can be applied on a per tab basis and there are options for image replacement patterns.

Should remove FAVICON too. Should have a per tab basis o all tabs basis.. a switch to do that.

For years the only reason why I kept Firefox installed was because it had a superior image block extension, and nothing worked quite as well in Chrome. That is no longer the case. This Text Mode extension takes image blocking to a whole new level by not only taking away images, but gives you a few options for *what* to replace images with (instead of causing all sorts of layout problems on most pages by simply deleting images on the page). As an added bonus, there's even an option to desaturate colors on the page to ensure text is readable for pages where the text contrast is based on an image that would be behind it. To the developer: THANK YOU for such an awesome extension. Please keep up the great work. Text Mode is an absolute life-saver.

it works wonderful! so 5 stars for sure!! only that is it possible to add a option to only desaturate pictures, instead of completely replace them with placeholder? because you know, once in a while, we want certain webpage to show a few pictures.

Brilliant tool! Been waiting for an extension to do this properly. I have some suggestions / requests: - Being able to choose wether to replace image or not (i love the desaturated colors look, but sometimes I need to see the images) - Being able to replace the image with a transparent block instead of the placeholders we have in the options Great work!

Very nice, this helps me browse at work semi-incogneato, very nice work. I have tried using CLI text browsers in Linux, like lynx, but they're just too much of a pain to use. This is the next best thing so far. Improvement: Like others have suggested, please update this extension so it can be toggled on/off on a per-tab basis. If this could be used on a per-tab basis I would give it 5 stars.

Suggestion: a way to selectively load images (once I click them). I hope it gets compatibility with Imagus. Also, instead of text-mode happening on all tabs of all windows, have the toggle affect the current tab only, and a white-list for automatically going into text-mode, based on the URL (we type in the options which websites automatically go to text-mode).

didn't work with google search. I was hoping to use this to get information on trypophobia. unfortunately any search on trypophobia brings up photos that trypophobics can't look at without feeling ill. Any google search in Text Mode still displays photos and youtube thumbnails.

Lionel Tilmont January 16th, 2014

Great extensions but sadly it also modifies other apps. For example when I have TweetDeck opened the avatars and thumbnails in my Timeline simply disappear. Would it be possible for the extension only on one tabulation at a time? Other than that great work ;)

Very nice idea but the image-holder graphic hurts eyes especially if the image is big. Give some options to replace it with a color or our own graphic.

Started getting weird pop-up ads when I hovered my mouse over certain words on websites. Wondering if its Text Mode's fault, will edit review to reflect my findings.

Dave Bleja October 9th, 2013
Dave Bleja

Gets rid of the images well, and I like how it keeps the formatting. But they chose the dumbest possible placeholders: jarring, 'vibrating' black and white lines that make you feel like you're nauseous and/or about to be hypnotised. Half the time they're more distracting then the original images for cryin' out loud. Nothing wrong with using diagonal lines to clearly show what's been hidden. But how about something like #cccccc and #dddddd instead of such a jarring combination? Also, I don't see the point of removing all colour from text. I'd say that that forces an extra feature that no one really asked for.

Momo Mono October 3rd, 2013
Momo Mono

Slow response and needs to reload the webpage to hide the pictures. Prefer to use Readbility or Instapaper if I want to read text only. Or simply just disable loading of graphics on webpages for text mode browsing.

Some configuration option should be added. P.S. the image-holder graphic really hurts my eyes.

Amit A September 10th, 2013

works fine... however... - the stripes are overwhelming - white-listing sites would be great - a right-click to load on page itself would be again good to have!!! (Do at your own risk - the irritating stripes can be changed to whichever color by changing "bg_blank_1px.png" file at this location --> USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\adelhekhakakocomdfejiipdnaadiiib\0.4.1_0\imgs)

Halil Öztürk August 21st, 2013
Halil Öztürk

It's a very useful plugin for productivity. But image-holder should use simpler colors the current one effects my eyes and it doesn't allow me to change it to something else. Other than that it's a good plugin.

A Google User July 2nd, 2013
A Google User

It's a nice idea but the image-holder graphic hurts my eyes (especially during scrolling), making it worse than using an image-heavy site. A simple grey block would be a thousand times better.

Daniel Doezema May 31st, 2013
Daniel Doezema

Overall this does a great job at conversing bandwidth while keeping a page readable and usable. My Feature Wish-List: * Ability to toggle black & white mode. * Ability to right-click an image and force-load it. * A less contrast-heavy stub image as it can appear behind text and make reading difficult.

M T May 27th, 2013

I gave 4 stars because them stripes are very annoying and make the page not looking easy to read. Please give options to chose between stripes and plain as for the moment the idea is great but ... omg them stripes.

James Delaney February 26th, 2013

I like this idea. Can we get some options please? Choose image replacement background, toggle colour or black and white text? Even better for me would be to replace images with a block of predefined colour overwritten with the image dimensions Image-holder style. That would be soooo useful.
