I've had great experience with this extension in terms of limiting autoplay on YouTube and ESPN. **HOWEVER** it also seems to block a seemingly unrelated feature on Google Sheets, which is the option to import outside documents. That is, when this extension is active, "Import" doesn't work (the popup screen is blank). When this extension is removed, "Import" works just fine. If anyone reads this and has a clue why this would be so -- or a method to customize this extension so that it works everywhere EXCEPT Google Sheets, I would love to know.
Even though this hasn't been updated in 4 years, this blocked auto-play on YouTube perfectly.
This extension used to work perfectly. But as another Reviewer has already pointed out; it blocks "Play". Blocking "Autoplay" is different. Maybe Dev will fix it to where it was before. I hope so.
not working anymore in yt
This app doesn't disable "autoplay" it disables "play". There is a difference. With this on, I can't use Google Meet in Chrome and anything that has a Soundcloud widget built in will not play anything, ever.
Disable HTML5 Autoplay is a great extension
Works...Great useful lightweight extension !!
good for youtube ??
Apparently contains the r.srvtrck.com adware malware. When I use my AWS account it spits out new tabs for sites like "neweegg.com" that try to show me ads. I identified this behavior by using F12 to bring up the dev console and watching the behavior as I clicked on "S3" within AWS. T fired off this: chrome-extension://cafckninonjkogajnihihlnnimmkndgf/js/inject.js And I got 3 new tabs - my company's firewall blocked the content itself. This is malware. Avoid it.
Even though this extension gets the job done, it renders some websites completely non-functional. Videos are not clickable. Some buttons also don't work. It took a while to figure out that this extension is the culprit behind all this mess.
Solved my problem, that's the only thing that matter to me :)
Does exactly what I expected and wanted big thanks. Will be pleased if it should work forever.
Does not work. With Disable Autoplay checked, the video is completely unaccessable. I wanted autoplay disabled, not entire access to the video. When Disable Autoplay UNCHECKED, the video is still completely unaccessable. The only way to enable the video again is to completely remove this extension from Chrome. (Spent 30 minutes trying this extension's dead functionality on cnn.com and yahoo.com autoplay videos.) Overall, it is a nice feature to disable videos--but it does not disable autoplay. Perhaps you could rename it "disable html5 video"
It's good at stopping autoplay but not so good at allowing exceptions. Exceptions are applied based on the domain the video is hosted from rather than the domain you are actually on. So websites that embed autoplay videos from a CDN or some other source like that will not allow autoplay exceptions in practice. Additionally, there is no way to manually add or edit a domain exception from the extension options. Instead, you have to actually browse to a site and use the extension menu. So again, it's great at blocking but terrible at unblocking.
There is something wonky about this extension. Specifically; unless the extension is disabled, the "Spectrum.net" website displays a blank page, regardless of per-site exclusion settings. However, disabling the extension completely allows proper display of the site. The least update to the extension was 2 years ago.
Actually work On Kiwi Browser (obviously not supported way) as the Extension work on all Sites not just www.youtube.com (desktop version)
Currently works alright for me.
This extension works and is helpful, thank you for creating it.
Been trying to stop the incredibly annoying NextDoor autoplay videos. Finally found an extension that works exactly as advertised -- thank you!
Amazing - I have finally managed to block CNN from auto playing video - thank you - Five Stars !!!
makes mega.nz give an error on loading but works
افزونه خوبیه. موقعی که توی سایت هایی مثل آپارات و یوتیوب میرید، از پخش خودکار فیلم جلوگیری می کنه
Works Great for youtube ! Thank You !
Not working. Fake extension.
I've tried a bunch of these extensions that are supposed to prevent videos from automatically playing. This is the only one that prevented YouTube videos from starting by themselves. The ONLY one. Not one other extension that I tried could do that. They all just let the videos play and then scrambled to pause them after a second or two. This one, however, doesn't even let them start until I press Play. This extension is a must-have.
works perfect, thanks!
It doesn't work on Instagram. Seems it is only working on YouTube! Note: I tested it in Opera browser.
Does not work. It only disables the preload of the data, but not the preloading of the METADATA (how long the file is). I want the player to not contact the server at all until the play button is pressed.
The only one I can find so far that still works on YouTube as of March 2020 (all the others I've tried allow at least a bit of the YT video to start (often loudly). This one puts a dead stop to it. Good job. UPDATE: Dammit! It breaks Google Voice. Doesn't matter what settings you have, to exclude it. If this extension is active at all in Chrome, then voice.google.com just gives you an endless "wait" cursor. Fargh. That's a make-or-break issue to me, so I sadly have to get this extension go and look again for another that aims to do the same thing.
I have been using the extension for months and very happy with the results, but a couple of days ago Google Voice stopped working and after much trial and error it turns out the problem was this extension. I disabled it and Voice is working again. If the problem is fixed I'll change my rating, but until then it will stay disabled.
It seems to work well, however, when I turn on "high contrast mode" on Windows 10 (Google Chrome), I can't read any of the text.
This extension breaks Google Meet on my Chrome Version 90.0.4430.85 (Official Build) (64-bit). This is on a Win 10 Home version 2004 MS Surface 3. Symptoms are the system passes all tests in Meet and I can see myself and record myself and play back both sound and video as a test prior to the meeting but while in the meeting I cannot see or hear others even though they can see and hear me. Disabling this extension cleared it up and Meet works again. I don't really hate the extension at all, it just doesn't work with Google Meet.
Disables google meet which is not desirable heavior.
Breaks Tidal music playback doesn't start.
Found one that is maintained and actually works. It is so irritating to scroll through my tabs and have 3 videos start playing cause I was looking for some thing else. So glad to find an extension that works again.
it was good until i found out it was the reason google sheets was giving me an error warning and told me to clear my cache and cookies, which i did multiple times. if you use google sheets, do not get this extension.
This extension doesn't block anything. Went onto FoxNews, CNN, USAtoday, MSNBC, Yahoo News and none of the videos were blocked and all started playing as soon as the page finished loading. Garbage, uninstalled.
It works great on most sites but breaks others. For example "https://open.spotify.com/" is just a black screen even if that URL is white listed. I had to uninstall it for this reason. Makes no sense that a white listed URL would still be affected by this...
Warning: Breaks Netflix: prevents videos playing completely, causes error ui3013
In order to make it work, you have to disable preloading too by default, then whitelist those sites you want autoplay on (e.g. bit chute), but then it's perfection. Works in Vivaldi and Kiwi, too.
Doesn't work, and hasn't been updated since January 2020. There's no toggle to know if you're blocking anything or when it's off. Very poorly created extension.
it doesn't work
Disable preloading doesn't seem to work. I see the video buffering even with Disable Autoplay and Disable Preloading both checked. Does a good job stoping Autoplay.
It works well most of the time, but a it causes couple of websites to stop working — even when you whitelist the websites! I have had to uninstall this extension. :(
If you are curious why, after installing this extension, a tab opens up randomly and then closes five seconds later, then I can confirm that it is being caused by this extension. I downloaded the code and had a look, and there's some code that appears to be gathering "statistics", but the tab obviously redirects to some ads. It's fishy as hell and I don't like it. I will attempt to report the extension in the hopes that the author will remove this.
Pretty good for what its used for, however when going to sites such as amazon, opens malicious links (that my antivirus luckily picked up). Do not install if you can't close random popup tabs on your browser in time.
It seems to work on CNN, but for some reason it is not possible to manually add exceptions for specific sites. Attempting to add CNN using the existing functionality just adds www.cnn.com. I imagine the videos are loaded from a domain other than www.cnn.com, so blocking them requires keeping the global block enabled.
Includes adware & popups, don't use this extension. You'll get popups to srvtrck.com.
I wished I had read previous reviews. This extension is causing unwanted popups in the browser. It's some kind of marketing scam. Stay Away! ; looking for alternatives.
Yup, also noticed URL hijacking and hastily opened tabs by this plugin. Criminal activity. Involved websites: - stat.totallzero.com (the devs' website) - digitach.net - r.srvtrck.com - linkbux.com
Not working, it's breaking the video! It does stop the autoplay. But if you pause the video and resume, it doesn't play anymore. You need to freaking reload the page again! So no, this one is zero stars bad.
recently has added spyware/malware including ecommerce hijacks to go.lnkam.com
Now redirects to malware sites: techero . net and r.srvtrck. com totall zero. com and more dangerous sites! Beware !!
As others mentioned this extension has recently started loading shady background tabs which redirect through shady malvertising networks. No thank you.
chrome's own video-autoplay does nothing, but this works ?
As other have commented, I'm getting weird popup ads, and ghost tab openings that then suddenly disappear. It does stop most videos from autoplaying, but this is malware/adware behavior and I can't have that.
Warning: This extension now contains malware that opens a new tab and sends statistics to totallzero.com and several other sites whenever you navigate to a web site it hasn't seen before. To test it, open a tab and go to a domain you don't normally go to (any web site, really) and watch for a new tab opening just to the right of the tab you're on. It usually opens it within about 5 seconds after you finish loading the page you're on.
Insecure plugin. Getting random gadzine popups when using either Facebook, Amazon, or LinkedIn. And yes, I've tried doing scans and checking for other viruses on my system -- the popups only happen when this extension is enabled. Should be either removed from the store or updated.
Didn't work at all. Had everything checked to disable videos from loading, but they still loaded, still popped up. Literally, the extension did nothing.
Needs to be able to whitelist sites that are not compatible. For example, listening to a music playlist on Plex will stop after every single song.
***** FINALLY ***** an autoplay blocker that works on CNN.com
Very good extension! It prevents all Youtube videos from autoplaying.
Older Version worked (0.6.2), this one does not! Did not stop autoplay on any site I checked. Thankfully the older version is back in the Chrome Web Store! I removed this version went back to 0.6.2 and no Autoplay.
It works for many of the videos I've seen autoplay on news sites, which I appreciate, but it also stops the audio from working in Google Meet, or other video conferencing programs/sites. There really should be a way to whitelist certain things. There are still plenty of videos that it doesn't stop, though.
This app would prevent spotify from working. When I found a configuration in the app that would allow it to load and play the extension wouldn't remember the settings after Chrome was closed, so every time I wanted to use Spotify I would have to go through the app, change the settings, then reload Spotify.
Works well on most sites. It doesn't capture everything, but close enough. The only weird one is that it seems to remove all video posts on tumblr? Not just pause them, but remove the whole post, so you can't see it on your dashboard. I think something about how it loads/unloads the video element to get it to stop playing causes tumblr's scripts to think the post failed to load, and it removes it. This is a relatively recent change (within the last ~3 weeks). Would be nice to have fixed, but it might not be feasible with the strategy this extension uses.
On CNN, it not only prevents autoplay, it prevents videos from playing at all.
It seems like allowing autoplay by default does not work (i.e. it still blocks autoplay on all websites). I want to blacklist only a single website from autoplaying but can't achieve that.
Works ok for preventing youtube autoplay but fails to block autoplay on some news sites like the washington post. Whitelist functionality is clunky: you must do it it on a site by site basis, while visiting each site. There is no way to keep and manually edit a list all at one time. 3 stars and still looking
Works fine on most sites, but even when disabled on a site, it still interrupts functionality and breaks them. In other words: disabled isn't disabled. Since it breaks sites I need for work, I cannot use it.
I added this yesterday as an upgrade to a similar previous extension that is no longer supported. This has an intuitive interface. It works okay if the default is not to disable Autoplay/Preloading. My preference is to do opposite, disable by default, and enable for specific sites. Doing so it blocks incoming audio in google hangout conversation. If it is by design then okay otherwise please fix it.
Almost perfect. Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Reloaded) is one of the few extensions that works to properly stop videos from playing (so that you can see each video's thumbnail) instead of letting the video start to play and then just 'pausing' it on its first frame (which often results in black video player window with no discernible preview image). Also, unlike some other autoplay stoppers, it does NOT cause any lag or buffering delay when you click on the video to start playing it, nor does it require two clicks to get the video to play. It's also great that you can adjust settings on a site-by-site basis and that the interface is clean, unintrusive and doesn't clutter your browser or get in your face. The only downside is that it does not handle Structured Page Fragments page loading on YouTube. This means that videos still autoplay whenever you use your web browser's Back or Forward buttons to navigate pages on YouTube. The 'Improve YouTube!' extension DOES handle SPF (so autoplay is blocked when using forward/back browser buttons) but it only works on one that one web site, whereas Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Reloaded) works for all web sites. If this YouTube SPF issue could be fixed, then this would be the perfect autoplay stopper for me.
it works! thanks
So far, I really need this and the extension is good. I just want the "disable preloading" to work accurately in order to save more internet data. Disable Preloading is not working properly on some websites like the "Recommended Videos" below on this site: https://www.topgear.com.ph/features/feature-articles/lto-drivers-license-application-costs-a4354-20191017 It blocks the auto-play though. Is it possible to have an option to specifically block auto-playing videos on a YouTube Channel's Home? Like this here: https://www.youtube.com/user/AmericasGotTalent This extension blocks the whole YouTube website. I only want to block those auto-playing videos on the Home YouTube Channel.
Well, I just installed it, reloaded the page I didn't want html5 vids auto-playing on annnnd. Nothing. Video auto played. So... hated it.
Pretty good extension. It does what it says, but it will break the Insert Image dialog for Google Sheets for some reason. Other than that, this extension should be packaged with Chrome.
I've got a bug report, and I can't find a link to submit it anywhere except here. On some pages, like this one, https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-334 , autoplay is always disabled no matter what the extension is set to do. I can whitelist the site, I can uncheck "Disable Autoplay", but the animations always start paused. The only way to prevent it is to go to Chrome extension settings and disable the extension completely.
This works Good extension
So far so good. I've had this for about a week, and its one of the only extensions that actually stopped autoplay on just about everything and thank god for the option to disable pre-loading. I run fairly close to my monthly data cap, and it made me nuts to see a video I didn't want to watch load 3/4 of it anyhow. Wish there were more users. I like extensions with thousands+ downloads so more people are using it and finding things. Especially after the Avast shenanigans, something with access to every page and its contents can be concerning.
Excellent add-on. Just wish it was a part of Chrome itself, autoplay is the worst!
Used to work, but stopped working a few days ago. It was brilliant when it worked.
OMG! This works and the most annoying Netflix Autoplay cannot bother me anymore. Highly Recommended!
WOULD BE FAR BETTER IF OPTION TO RUN ON ALL SITES EXCEPT EXCLUDED SITES Right now it's the reverse, must include sites one-by-one The other options (always running or "on click") aren't good for some people Though no complaints if all the above options were there
Doesn't quite work with MPEG Dash or HLS. Both Twitter and Reddit still preload the videos and eat up all of my mobile data plan. The concept is good, though.
Completely useless - it breaks legit site and does not stop autoplay on any 'spam' ones.
It seem to show hidden ads in background tabs when enabled.
Installed from a recommendation on the google support site where we were crying about the state of autoplay and this extension saved my sanity! I'd been scrolling down www.stuff.co.nz to get to comments and it started FOUR videos playing over my movie :( That's all I wanted from this extension so when I did my usual 'drag a youtube tab to the TV' thing I almost cried with joy when the tab that got the focus on the PC DIDN'T start playing over the one now on the tv... it works on every site that I use INCLUDING ESPN AND CNN which others have found issues with, maybe cos I have adblock pro, dunno. Also as someone else commented, in addition to the left-click checkbox options, you can select 'options' and ensure that both loading and playing are disabled for ALL sites by default with only the listed sites having custom configuration. It's PERFECT in my experience (touch wood!)
i love this addon but recently on youtube i have been seeing it not pause vids when i refresh pages when im on a video and its annoying as hell can u update please
I have to dsiable in settings it for some websites, but worth it to stop those ****ing auto-play videos
It works well blocking auto-play video content but it becomes disabled almost every day. I go to the Extensions menu and it says it's been corrupted. I repair it, and it works for a little while, then gets corrupted again.
this generates tracking popups. very spammy. deleted.
It behave as malware
With Edge Chromium (77.0.223.0) this works for a while but after a few days it stops working and gets flagged with "This extension may have been corrupted". The repair option works, but then... a few days later it gets "corrupted" again.
Causes pop-ups to tracking websites. Shame, it otherwise works very well.
YES! I'm SICK and TIRED of stupid websites with their stupid autoplay videos. I get that they need to rack in those view counts and the ad revenue, but annoying me is not going to fly anymore! This extension rocks :) Unlike other people - I've not yet had problems with any redirects or ads, but then again I'm equipped with plenty of adblocking, anti-script, anti-anti-adblocking, anti-tracking and whatever tools, so this probably wouldn't be an issue anyway. All in all, news websites and tech forums/websites are finally bearable to click on :)
It opens new tabs to dodgy URLs
It spams. Push out third party targeted AD when opening websites
While it does work, it has a major performance problem. As soon as I started using it my Chrome became extremely slow and unstable and had a huge increase in memory usage. From 200 MB to over a GB, until Chrome simply crashed. As soon as I disabled the extension, all the problems when away.
It works, technically, on a lot of sites. One issue is that it pops up this totallzero.com website, which is broken, and is confusing to experience. Uninstalled, especially as I hadn't checked the box agreeing to such tracking.
It's great, but on vimeo, there is no way to playback Videos until this addon is disabled :-(
it keep pushing ads and redirect tabs !!! if I could rate it 0 star I would do but fortunately I can report it
Works. 5*
Good when it works, however I wish it would do so more often. Don't know what happened but Twitch now refuses to show streams with the extension turned on - I even disabled everything else and it doesn't show any errors in the log either.
