This extension shouldn't be needed, but most online publications continue to present their articles as black text on a white background. Tough on the eyes if you spend too much time reading the news as I do. I've set up Just Read to present everything as light gray text on a very dark gray background (still not black and white), which saves my vision.
While this extension isn't the MOST user friendly for those who are not familiar with how to navigate GitHub for a FAQ response, it is still easily worth it, even if it were to take some time for some users to figure out the basic macros, either in the extension manager or through the aforementioned site. PRO TIP: If you do get this extension for a Chrome browser, after installing it, merely navigate to this URL - "chrome://extensions/shortcuts" (just copy-paste and hit "enter"; also, it's the basic Chrome Extension setup URL, so do not be afraid to navigate to it), and it will show you the default macro interactions, which can be changed, by clicking the little pencil/pen icon to the right of the given macro, and then you're all set! Even the more stubborn sites that you wish to view-- especially if you wish to view them in a basic, uncluttered format-- are easily converted into a plain, clear set of copy that is customizable by theme and easy on the eyes. I love this extension so much that I actually shelled out for the "Premium" version, merely to support the creators for their excellent work. I will say, however, that my Premium Dashboard has yet to sync with my extension history, though this could be the result of a set of conflicting extensions that I have installed (I have many... ). Keep up the great work, Zach!
Doesn't work on kiwi and desperately needs dark mode
Its a really amazing extension for sure though one of the most recent updates seems to have broken it for me. I mostly use this on translated websites because they have a lot of clutter, previously you had to open and close Justread while not reloading the page for it to collect all the content properly, now it forces the page to reload making it incapable of formatting translated pages correctly. Please roll out a fix!
I evaluated a handful of distraction-free reading extensions before settling on this one, for two reasons: 1) it has a nice-looking dark mode; 2) any highlights I make with Readwise still reference the original URL, unlike two of the other extensions I tried which temporarily load pages into the extension itself. I'm not a deveoper so I'm sure there's a better way to express that. ;-) The extension is also fast and lightweight.
Hi Zach, just read is great as it saves tons of time scanning and reading long texts turning them into something more readable like on a book. Some sites with tons of design render badly: the design like all those clickable images are removed (I use the default theme with body background color as black to ease the reading) which breaks the eye scanning logic of the site but I think just read is for long blog posts anyway. Great job and please add a one time fee contribution so I can pay for it.
Very usefull addon, thanks. Where do I find the keyboard shortcut to apply Just Read on the current web page?
function is good. but used too many RAM. using many plugin, RAM top1 ad-block, top2 just-read. Make this plugin consume less resource.
This plug-in epitomises 'less is more'; which is why I'm keeping my review short.
This is quite possibly the best extension I've installed in any browswer. Today there is so much visual garbage and noise on so many pages that they are unreadable to me. "Just Read" takes care of that. It's like I'm in a room trying to watch TV but the room is filled with people who are shouting at me. Then "Just Read" walks in and says, "SHUT. UP." And they do.
Indispensable for two reasons: eye strain/aging eyes and a super-wide monitor that makes many web pages (notably Wikipedia and Gmail) too wide to read comfortably without resizing the browser window. One click and I've got a clear, appropriately sized interface to the text. I love Just Read. I've been using it for years.
I use Just Read to save PDFs of articles flagged by my employer's Google Alerts. It's easy to use, relatively bug-free, and works with most websites. I highly recommend this extension.
JustRead lets me get to the content without the distractions of the junk to the sides of the article. It is a great resource.
JustRead is my second-most important extension (I use it with Edge Chromium. There are so many good features, but here's a fave: when you 'Save to PDF,' you get an actual PDF with full text, able to be edited or copied from. If you want to have a quick, no-clutter version of a busy web page, this is it. It doesn't come any better.
This has become an essential tool for someone who reads tons of news online, where ads and side columns are a constant clutter. 100% recommended, but if I had to complain: 1) It started adding a "?jr=on" variable to the end of the URL, so if you copy and paste the URL it is incorrect. I just noticed a setting that will include the original URL at the top of the edited text though, which solves this problem. 2) On many news websites the opening paragraph is formatted differently as a style choice. Just Read often interprets this as it being junk and eliminates it. I always copy the first paragraph of a story before clicking the JR button and then edit the first unneeded text to paste that paragraph in. If I could make a feature request, it would be an option to keep or remove all images on a page, and possibly like a sensitivity threshold for what JR cuts out, so you can make it automatically remove more or less superfluous text, if that's even possible! To be honest, the premium features aren't that attractive to me, but I'd consider upgrading just as a thanks for the features included for free - Just Read just notified me that I've used the extension nearly 3,000 times already!
This has become a daily use facility for me. When i dont have time to read something at the moment, i no longer have to capture the website and hope its there later. I simply use this and print to a PDF for later reading offline or even print it. Pulls just the article and gets rid of the clutter. Awesome!
Indispensable for me. But after the most recent update (August 2022) it is impossible to switch between themes?? The dropdown button becomes unclickable.

it asks you to joint premium from the first moment you open this app
love this SO SO much! i've been using it for months and it has never failed me! however, a few days ago it stopped working for some reason. i removed it then reinstalled it a couple times but it still doesn't work. i still loved it for the time i could use it though.
Usually I love using Just Read, it is the perfect extension to make any webpage readable. I mainly use it for reading books online. But since a couple of days ago, I the extension has not been working for me. As soon as I open the ext. the webpage will freeze and nothing else. I have already tried reinstalling Just Read twice, but it did not help in any way. I am afraid that, at least for me, the extension has broken completly.
Been using over a year and it works great on most websites. Strips everything but text found in paragraph form which should be easy if it is HTML.
As someone who is autistic and therefore has visual processing issues, this extension is a crucial accessibility tool for me. There are many poorly-designed websites that have so many pictures, videos, and popups that I literally cannot read them without this tool. I also have yet to encounter a website that does not work with this tool. Thank you for developing it!
It can be used by average person, but this extension is primarily for people adept with handling CSS scripts. Allows auto domain run.. not many readers do. One great thing is that it lends itself to very specific site run for scripts which avoids problems with badly written scripts interfering. I notice a convenient share button. Uniquely, is a start/end deletion mode where you can delete the parts that you've read already.. 5/1/22 I agree with the author, it is trivial. I just needed to get more adept with scripts. Thank you for your help :-)
Customizable and distraction-free.
Add an ability to hide the original full page content for autoloaded sites list in the read mode, but with a some pause before hiding – some N seconds (add a text field for it in settings). Because many sites are protected with the cloudflare CDN with 5 sec timeout. Make this pause a variable value because of some other sites can be protected with a different way/timeout
I want to use the free version and I need an option to get rid of the + sign to the right of the articles that moves as I scroll, it's distracting.
Nice extension, pretty minimalistic, supports custom css.
Does not include all portions of the page. Reproduce: go to the webpage's function 'Print', toggle reading view with this extension, save to pdf (preview) does not include all sections. 'Reader View' by yokris.dev did the job.
The free version is great but I would recommend the 'premium' version if you have the means!
Sounded good. Proof is in the pudding. uninstalled
You can specifically choose the text you want to read by highlighting the text, this extension can also highlight the text automatically by hovering your cursor on the text which saves a lot of time.
The best customizable reader, great for saving pdfs of articles!!
It is a marvel! Bug setting icon is a bit simple.
You are inviting users to upgrade to premium, but after collecting the money I still cannot get the premium features. Have received absolutely no response to email query either - reporting this extension as abuse to Google.
Looks like it doesn't work for dailymail anymore. (Not that I read it - just a good test case!). I'd like an extension that just puts together all the text on one page for me i.e. remove most of CSS. If someone could code this and get back to me or otherwise I'll have to try.
It currently cut out some content and does not display the whole document, it does not allow editing as the window is stuck at the top right and cant enlarge, and the premium ad displays constantly even when closed.
I tried many reader to read novels online but this one is the best by far.
ok
very helpful app
Great! Does the job.
This is great.
It doesn't do more than the native reader mode in chrome. No point in using it for most people.
its just makes life easier
Omg this extension is amazing! It quickly summarizes text and is super helpful for school and work alike. Would definitely recommend!
Beautifully performed. Easy, fast and elegant.
إضافة متميّزة.. أوصي بها طلّاب المعرفة وكل من يقرأ الكثير على الشبكة يوميا شكرا جزيلا
Perfect, surprised by the simplicity and elegance of this tool.
I can't imagine reading articles without it. Blocks all the annoying pop-ups.
Really helps to unclutter and keep me on task. I waste less time and energy on the things that don't matter! Thank you!!
A fantastic plugin. So many great features and does a great job on every site I've tried it on.
NO reason to require my email address, unless you want to sell it to spammers. That's a dealbreaker. There are other similar extensions that work just as well.
Excelente ! y 100% personalizable. Update: from 5 to 1 star, the permission to read the email address doesn't fit with the task of this plugin. Very likely for spam purposes.
Since last update it requires access to email address, which it should not need. This is a sign that this extension is in the process of being monetarized along with your data. It was a great extension (5 / 5), too bad, but I guess all things have an end. Bye bye
It helps remove irritating ads and other waste pictures and videos.......It is very helpful in reading especially to student.
it was nice, but you cant remove the promotion for just read premium, when you click "im not intrested, it does nothing.
This thing is so good. I just registered for Fortune. But even after registering, it grey out the screen from time to time and adverisement here and there. This is after I paused by Ad Blocker. Life saver this thing. Try it. You will like it!
used it a few times works perfectly well
Great extension! Thank you very much for it!
This is an amazing extension. Hats off to developers !!
Working again. Had stopped for awhile and I really missed it. So thankful for this extension especially as more and more sites fight the ad blockers. I don't mind a few well placed ads (businesses deserve to make money) but so many ads make things unreadable. Thank you JustRead!
Works in very littel range of webpages. I have tried more than 10 such extensions and my favourite is Fika. You can alo try DOM.
Absolutely indispensable
fantastic!!
One of the must have extensions, really useful, following the "less is more" idea. Love it.
I love Just Read. I like the fact that you can remove parts of the article, like if it tells you to check out another article, I can simply delete it. I love to print out the articles as a PDF to be able to read on Adobe Acrobat Reader offline. I'll also add the PDF to my Google Drive and share it. The only thing that I'd change are to include more features on the Premium because I feel like I can get everything in the Free Version. I will definitely continue to use Just Read!
Been looking for a good "reader" extension, and I think I found. Thanks dev team!
Oh my gosh, I literally just got this extension and I'm already in love. I simplified an article with a bunch of annoying gifs, but useful advice I wanted to save, and was able to delete the gifs and anything else i didn't want! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
great apple like reader mode, also with dark mode
This is a really nice extension, however I have one remark: many articles have useful images interspersed throughout the article that disappear in reader mode. How can I get article images to display? Thanks
Works great, would recommend!
Finally the functionality which chrome is taking ages to add. Thank you!
That's the only one which i always wanted. Thanks so much developers for this amazing extention !
Can't read any article without this!
Just perfect!
Great little extension. Used it for over three years now. Problem is it just up and stopped working all of a sudden. Now when I click the button, nothing happens. One minute it was working and I was using it, I went to the next chapter of a novel on RoyalRoad and it stopped. On top of that, the creator only allows support via github, which you need an account for- What the hell man, just activate issues here.
Pretty good and easy to use tool. I just have one suggestion. It would be very helpful to add a text-to-speech service to this tool, since it's getting the article text. I could read more articles this way! (And it doesn't have to be a perfect TTS service ;))
Love it. I've gotten fed up with news sites and other featured articles etc. showing up on the side of the article and this fixes that! so helpful
Awesome plugin for mid-workday reading. Very customizable and open source! Great job y'all
perfecto!!!!!!!! clean, simple and does the job, many other extensions were cutting off the margin. somehow this should be default in chrome, idk why chrome removed 'selection' on print preview, NOW not issue when using this extension
Eyes saver! Great!
Just Read! Just Found it. Just Loved it.
Customize option not working. Only 'close without saving' option visible. 'Close and save' is not there at all. Fix this immediately.
Best reader extension i ever used!
Super awesome, love this thing. It feels so great wiping all the distracting and irrelevant clutter away from my screen, leaving only the real value. Thank you!
Exactly what I was hoping to find, I can now read my textbook comfortably! Extremely easy to use as well.
Perfect app for reading long articles, and printing them to PDF !!
For propeller-heads, VERY hard to configure!!! "Options" brings up this box of HTML script to edit ... I just wanted to increase the default font size and there was no easy way to do so.
Nice, clean and works well. Absolutely worth trying. Thanks, Ghosts in the machine! (Zach and friends) One caveat. I too could not get Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator to function. Perhaps in an update?
Awesome. This also working with 'Surfingkeys' extension so that all the vim short cuts still work. Great work. Thanks!
the best in its category
Picked this one over 3 others I tried first. This was the best one cos i could easily just take pictures out, Print or Save the page and change the font and page width to save on paper too. I don't always need to Print - sometimes Save is enough. Thanks for a wonderful extension! Web pages are getting so ridiculously 'noisy' now.
Effectively removes ads and distractions. Plus provides direct access to css code for customization. Love it!
Very useful
Such tranquility! Goodbye annoying auto playing videos!
Great extension - hides the advertisements, inline ads, videos and clutter. It makes reading online articles a pleasure: consistent font, colors and layout allows the brain to concentrate on the content without being distracted by the clutter. 5 stars !
I like it very very very much!!! Thank you developers!!!
Very handy! I am also having a great experience with "Just Read" as an extension for Kiwi Browser in Android OS. Even with portable devices "Just Read" is incorporated in my workflow. The highlight feature in premium version is worth using too. The developer is very responsive for support requests. Keep the ingenious work!
good
One of the best apps I have used. Thank you Zach...
This is a great reading extension; I'm glad it uses the default font style before letting you pick your own style. It'd be awesome if it coded into something that had a shortcut for widening the text box/ lengthening the line. Like if cmd + + was +100 to the textbox width that'd be cool, and one for text size too. BUT you can change the text on the title, date, and author. That seems like a weird choice and could be manipulated or something.
This extension is great when and customizable for the user! However, I did find one issue. The printing function for Just Read is not the most effective using default margins, there always seems to have some cut off text which can only be solved by custom changing the margins that can sometimes be tedious,
