Great.

I was just about to stop using Chrome as my default browser (again!) when I heard about this extension in a discussion thread about, How to Stop Chrome Tabs from Refreshing. Thanks a million! This works as intended and as described. Chrome is worthless without this extension.

Worked really well until around November-December 2022 but as of the start of 2023, it's working again for me!

Does exactly what it claims to do. Gets rid of the pesky, annoying automatic tab discarding chrome implemented without stunting your computer's performance.

It did not work for me. Am using Dell Latitude E7440 with Windows 10 and this extension didn't make any difference at all. Am puzzled as to why Chrome does this to us. Ended up opening a new tab each time that is very annoying.

Love it... Pretty useful.

This extension actually started to completely ruining tabs even loading, sometimes making tabs load for up to 20 seconds before completely failing to load a tab. Once I disabled this extension, my tabs load normally.

It doesn't work, for sure caused by Chrome not extension developer, I just wasted time .. Google doesn't want you to have any control on your computer at all, but that's fine! the more they will act like in Orwell or Huxley novels, the more people will stop using their service and even more services and companies will make money in the future :)

While this may work in some versions of chrome, it isn't working on mine. Button does nothing, installed on kiwi mobile Chrome browser latest playstore build.

It did absolutely nothing. Tabs still get discarded, refreshed and otherwise messed with even when I manually click on the extension. Maybe it's my laptop, but for me it's a complete waste of storage space

On my computer, my tabs keep reloading every single time I exit out and come back into a tab. Can someone help me fix this problem from doing this please?

It's not working for me ;-; cri what did i do wrong. Does it stop reloading if it has an x symbol on the discarding column or when it has a checkmark?

Thank you for this extension, clicking on a discarded tab and loosing all your info or having to log back in to a secure page is maddening This is a million times better than manually disabling the discard via the chrome page each day and every time you accidentally close a tab.

This won't work for most of the users that are seeking it because it doesn't override low storage reloading. Most users here experience tab reloading issues because of low storage; This extension can't fix this, nothing can.

Thanks for a great extension! I'm getting annoyed by Chrome discarding a tab/window that I need to always be on for notifications, and to stop others from being discarded too because of slow reloading. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

love it, working perfectly fine but i noticed that chrome still would refresh the page , how to redo this issue 1. open up a tab (in my case its a yt playing a music) 2. left it open for a few minute, in my case its 40+ 3. listen to the music while waiting 4. click the tab again, and huwala it refreshed the page, but it doesnt freezed the page tho, contact me at RobusOfficial#7808 in discord

I'm using Vivaldi (Chrome based browser) and have been manually toggling tabs "Auto Discardable" to off in vivaldi://discards. That solves the reload problem for that tab. I was slightly worried that doing that for every tab (as this extension does) might cause performance issues... Haven't been using this that long but so far no problems. It has actually IMPROVED performance. I think that increase in performance means something is not right in either Chrome or Vivaldi... Hopefully that'll get fixed. But so far, this extension is great, works as stated. I'll update if I have problems.

Terrible. Doesn't work.

Sometimes I'll just sit in various apps writing stuff and then leave because.. ADHD and everything I've previously written (or worked on) disappears because reloading. This app stops that.

This extension makes Chrome so much better. I have around 10-15 tabs opened at once and it is so annoying that they keep reloading. Thanks for this!

For avoiding browser refresh its pretty useless, maybe other people find use in it, not me. tip to anyone, if you have a clickable icon, make it change when enabled, the user has zero visual feedback right now.

Just discovered this extension, after first discovering that, for inscrutable reasons known only to themselves, Google murders tabs that sit in the background for longer than pleases them, unannounced, without warning, and without giving the user any recourse in the matter. I run tabs in the background in similar fashion to other posters on this review thread, and for longer than I'd care to admit, I was bedeviled by things "not working" for unknowable reasons. Stuff would just sort of drop off the radar and quit working. I had no idea that I was even *using* my hidden tabs, and that's because I, up until this nonsense raised its ugly head, just sort of expected unopened tabs that had been sitting around for ten minutes or two hours or whatever (and it's *my* choice and it's *my* computer and it's *not* somebody else's choice as to what runs, and for how long, and whether its in the foreground, the background, or the surface of Mars), *were still there* and had not been surreptitiously "put to sleep" by Google in the same manner that people take their dying pets to the vet and have them "put to sleep." Really Google? REALLY? So ok. So I *use* Google, and Google uses *me* and for the longest time, things sort of just "worked" and it was a bargain with the devil, but I had reached an equilibrium with my devil, and I was ok with things. Until they stopped working, unannounced, with no warning of any kind. Enter "chrome://discards" which I discovered earlier today, and gleefully invoked to keep the damnfool tabs alive, only to discover that it would revert to its nasty default behavior every time Chrome was stopped and restarted. Feh. And now I find myself here, running Linux Mint with Ungoogled-Chromium (Look into it kids, it's good stuff, and despite being quite pesty to install and update on Linux, it's well worth every jot and tittle of annoyance that might come with getting it up and running stably, and which I'm sure the overlords at Google are *not* amused with, but oh well.) having loaded this phenomenal extension which goes by the ungainly name of "Disable automatic tab discarding" that WORKS, and has, so far, kept working, through multiple Ungoogled-Chromium shutdowns and a couple of computer reboots, and for the time being all is well, once again. And if, as with what I'm reading above in certain cases, this extension gets monkeywrenched by the nice folks at Google, I can (I hope), always go back to typing chrome://discards into the address bar after opening the tabs I intend to keep running in the background INDEFINITELY, and manually kill the miserable auto-discard "feature" that I have been dealing with, unawares, for longer than I'd like to admit. So. Nice extension. The work is greatly appreciated. And for those of you who have trouble with it, (as of right now, anyway) a manual invocation of chrome://flags, with the tabs in question already up and running so as they will appear on the list, is a nice fallback position to keep me from running afoul of dogs that don't bark and notifications that don't notify. Phew. That was a *lot*, wasn't it? Sigh.

Looks like it worked once upon a time, but it hasn't since I got it. As a result of "automatic tab discarding", I've come to absolutely HATE Google and anything related to it.

I ONLY use Chrome for Gmail/Hangouts because Google keeps limiting features when on other browsers like not being to make calls on Hangouts and since I need to have 10 different accounts, each meant for different things, open on Gmail at once so I'll be able to do the things I need to while being able to instantly respond to notifications/messages/calls/etc., tab discarding is TORTURE! I'll be on one Gmail tab for maybe 3 minutes writing an email or doing a tech-assist call, then the other 9 will unload, so I'm not getting notifications, ON TOP OF having to reload Gmail completely which for the past year has been absurdly slow, taking even up to a minute to load the non-basic HTLM version (no add ons/modifications past the these and decent connection but their code is ridiculously inefficient). Point is, this is a life saver, anyone who hates tab discarding should get this, Google should really stop forcing "features" on people!

I've used it for a long time and It's been great, except these last few days that I don't know why it can't stop chrome from discarding some websites. it's still a God's gift for chrome users ?

For the most part, this extension works perfectly. My only issue is that often it will disable/turn off, and I have to manually restart my computer to get it to run again. But other then that, I recommend it a lot.

After the first 10 minutes of use this extension has dramatically improved the Chrome tabs experience. Tabs now snap open as they should, I can't understand why this isn't a standard option in Chrome anymore?

Had to restart my chromebook for it to work, but it does work. Screw Google AND their auto discarding. Edit: It's stopped working. Tabs constantly auto discard now. :(

Just Perfect!

This extension no longer works. I installed it on my Chromebook, and absolutely NOTHING changed. Even with two tabs open, the unused tab would freeze. Useless.

My tabs were refreshing in Google Chrome on my Chromebook. Found and added this extension, restarted Chromebook, started working as expected straight away. I've usually got Twitter/Facebook/Twitch/Mycujoo/Music and a bunch of other social/media tabs open so very helpful. 5-Stars from me, but more importantly a huge thank you for this extension and thank you to the other reviewers who included helpful tips!

Thank you! As usual, the Chrome devs think they know what is best for everybody, and forced tab discarding down our throats, despite it not being wanted by many of us. One day they might learn that 'one size fits all' is a total fallacy, but until that day, we'll have to rely on decent folk like yourself writing the extensions we need, to give us the browsing experience that we want. This extension seems to work. However, the extension is very badly named and has a poor ICON. The ICON has a slash through it......this slash tends to show that an extension is inactive. The next problem is that when you hover over the icon it tells you "automatic tab discarding is currently disabled" .............this message infers that the actual EXTENSION named "automatic tab discarding" is not doing anything at all (disabled) It's VERY badly named and described. You should NAME the extension something like.........TAB RETAINER. When you hover over the ICON the message should be............. ...... "Tab retainer is enabled & your tabs are not discarded"........... You should also change the ICON to a better ICON But thanks for your free efforts. Thx V

There are a lot of good reviews for this extension, but it doesn't work for me. My tabs still reload when I switch, even if it's just between two tabs.

This extension is very very bad. It says that it will stop the reloading tabs on my chromebook, but it doesn't work and still makes the tabs reload. The extension is very bad and I suggest you not download it. It there is a way to stop the reloading tabs, please tell me how.

Omg, this is the best tool ever. I used to be able to listen to youtube while doing my work, but the automatic refreshing wouldn't let me.

Actually doesn't work at all. Installed it, reloaded Chrome, tabs still reload every time i click on them. No change. A very thankful and happy edit: It DOES WORK! Unfortunately, it also has to be coupled with disabling the tab freezing in flags for it to work properly. Do that, and you're golden.

this extension works great but i keep having to uninstal and reinstall it every few days.

This extension works especially well on systems with older CPUs (for example, Core2Duo machines) with bloated Windows, where the default automatic reloading takes lots of unnecessary time and resources. I don't know why Chrome removed the flag, but I'm so glad that this extension brings it back! Chrome works a lot better with background tabs now.

It's very convenient. Although after like an hr or less, my tabs went right back to being discarded and i dunno why....lol. But A for effort for the developer.

This thing doesn't work on my Chromebook at all. My tabs still reload forcing me to restart my laptop. Absolutely useless.

As of Jan 25th, 2020 - This extension only seems to work 30-40% of the time on my lower end Chromebook. I should note that when I was able to prevent tab discarding via the Flag method my tabs never were discarded - So I don't think its a hardware/performance issue, I think Chrome is overriding this extension at times. I would pay for it to work 100% of the time.

Does the job well. Was breaking video conference when I had to reference another tab. This fixed it.

It works for a bit but some how google figures out how to make sure we can't swipe over to an open tab to avoid ads. Google is the worst company ever and should not be allowed to bare USA representation on it's products.
