I, do not like Chrome, no sir, I do not. Like Ford vs Chevy, Chrome vs Firefox is a controversy. It's Chevy/Firefox by a mile in my case. That said, I need to use Chrome for several work applications and Google Workspace. Pretty sad a State Bureaucracy depends on Giggles...err Google to maintain their information technology. Proper Menubar for Google Chrome is a godsend. I can navigate as needed and have everything I need at the touch of a button or 6. My only regret is I can't give you 6 stars!
I'm not paying to see if it works. I thought it worked previously but not any more. Removing as no sense in having an extension that is useless.
I love it. There are enough changes in Chrome (coming from FireFox) to make. That tool bar made it all a little easier.
THANKS TO THE DEVELOPER, THE EXTENSION NEEDS ONLY TO MORE SOME OPTIONS TO BECOME INTEGREATED, ADDING USER OPTION TO SAVE THE USER SETTINGS, SHOWING PROPER MENUBAR IN ALL WEB PAGES AND THE ABILITY TO DRAG THE MENUBAR TO THE TOP OF PAGE
"A swing and a miss". Nice try, but borderline useful. Don't have actual access to bookmarks. I use them a lot. You have to open the "hamburger" menu to get at them. You also cannot manage them at the menu, like drag and drop because, they are not there anyway. This menu is just a local web page overlaying the one you are viewing. I just wish the Brave team would put the menu bar back. Hamburger menus are fine for cellphones, but that is where they should have stopped. If people get confused transitioning between devices maybe they should stay with their little iphones, or whatever. Or, better yet, stay away from confusing technology with more that 10 buttons on it and leave perfectly good menu interfaces where they belong.
It doesn't save my settings. I put TOP and it never showed up. Yes I hit the green button. And every page of the program options is the same thing. No where to save your settings. I'd give up programming and sell rags, is my advice to you. Edit a year later: It is useful on occasion, but I default having it off, when I got used to using only when needed, it wasn't that bad.
I have installed the extension, enabled it etc, it is STILL not showing up in chrome, what am I missing??
Have to click the extension for it to work. Expected a menu bar to appear from my browser. Worthless.
Can you add a left-justified menubar feature?
Works fine, very useful. And here I am again, five years down the line and still loving this sympathique little extension. It's more than high time for me to offer a little contribution in recognition of Stefan's altruism - and I do so with pleasure. Thank you, Stefan: It's one from the heart, as they say.
One can only thank the developer for making this available. The interest among so many to get the menu bar back I think reflects the importance of legacy user interfaces for efficiency (for the user) as well as comfort. Sadly, I assume it was impossible to code an extension placing the menu bar at the top of the browser window. Nonetheless helpful . . . and as to user interfaces just imagine how frustrating it has been for power users to adapt to Microsoft's endless "updates" to MS Office/especially Word . . . adding no new features etc.
might have to turn it on and off once or twice but it flawless after!
I found the extension very helpful. So Much better using google with it than not.
Unlike "Exit" from the standard Chrome mechanism, "Exit" on the menubar does not preserve existing tabs and windows. Further, it prevents Ctrl+Shift+T from restoring any tab except the one "Exit" was selected from. With this difference in functionality, this extension can not be considered a Proper Menubar.
Does not work.
The extension installs just fine. I changed the background colour to make it more pleasing to the eyes, but now when I try to go to the settings page, I am unable to use the Advanced options or the design section where I had been before to change the background colour.
works great--I have never had a problem seeing the menu bar. I used this product for over five years now.
it still works fine in 2021. pretty good extension although there is a bit of a delay when loading
Not exactly sure if you can actually call it a bar, it's not what I thought it was.
Rubbish. No menu bar appeared. Wasted time.
While it does have the menus, they're all below the other top bars (tabs, search bar, bookmarks) with no apparent way to move it above any of these where it is found in literally everything else. I know Google did this on purpose - because they're jerks - but it belongs above everything else, including the tabs. The extension really needs a way to move the bar up further.
I added this to my chrome and edge browsers, but my browser window started glitching when transitioning from one web page to another. The following is a screenshot of what appears for a split second between web pages. I disabled the addon and the glitch went away. VERY annoying. https://i.imgur.com/hiE7XdW.jpg
The chrome-menu button dropdown is not completely themed. The menu choices are split between browser menu bar and google products... can't have both? Or a google menu on the browser menu bar? Note for those complaining about menu missing: It is not possible to properly develop in Chrome... many pages are off-limits. The Gods are jerks.
Chrome really needed this toolbar. I am ecstatic with this extension. Easy to setup, customize and use. And the developer has other great stuff. Take a peak. It might not be for you, but it is definitely intelligent. Nonetheless, the toolbar for chrome is exceptional. THANKS!
where can i find open file option
To designers of Proper Menubar for Google Chrome. I want to remind you, that it is 21 century century and not Middle Ages ... Welcome to the future!
Wrote a bad review when it wasn't working properly. It is now working kind of as it should. The menu options doesn't have the normal shortcuts like Firefox used to have. The bookmarks menu should actually display your bookmarks not just have links to the manager or bookmark tabs. That is the thing most people would expect to see when they click on "bookmarks". The support page is useless for making suggestions. At best you will be taken to JustAnswer which is using a bot that's clueless about what you are referring to. So I will be hunting down an email for the dev for now. I realize that Chrome is developed by people who don't live in the real world and they intentionally make it difficult for developers to make things the way they'd like.
I like it however it seems to not stay where I put it. Need to check the settings and see what I have checked and unchecked.
Can't figure out how it works. Installed it, closed Chrome, opened Chrome back up..no menu bar. Doesn't seem to work.
DOES NOT WORK. AND YES STEPHAN, I'M RESTARTED THE BROWSER
FIX FOR BROKEN EXTENSION!! The others are correct. This doesn't work - unless you know the secret password and magic action! The "+" sign is nowhere to be found, but it you click on the "magic" puzzle piece icon on the far right next to your picture it will open the Extension Manager. Scroll down the list and you'll find the "+" sign that DOES work. It won't display an actual menu bar, but all it's menu choices are there and available, just not as clean and picturesque as a true menu bar.
The menu bar does not move into place. When I go to the Extensions icon and click on Proper Menue Bar I get a message that is does not work on this web page. The web page if a fresh Chrome Browser window.
proper menu bar does not work properly. when it is on a black and white data screen keeps flashing on the screen with information. very distracting and should be corrected by chrome. not good.
thanks for this i love it u get sense jare
After reading some reviews I got the impression these writers didn't understand how to use the program. I found the program easy to use. Just what I needed.
Unable to set options - keeps resetting to defaults. Toolbar colors settings don't appear anymore.
Proper Menu Bar caused my Chrome browser to flicker on every click. Removing it stoped.
Great addon
I'm trying to like it but when I pick the black button a box appears. The top of the box reads "Proper Menubar does not work on this web page, please try another page. Now it works. Just had to close and re-open Google Chrome. When I re-opened, it came right up with Chrome. Good Job. Love it.
Excellent! Didn't work at all until I restarted Chrome. Thanks from down under!
does not work
THANK YOU! Finally, I feel complete when using Chrome!
Garbage. Waste of time. Doesn't work.
It's useless, as many reviewers point out. The developer's suggestions do not work. The black box with the + in it is black, regardless of the website one is on. How many 1-star reviews are required before something is removed from the Chrome Web Store?
It's not a proper menu bar. A proper menu bar would allow for keyboard shortcuts (alt+b to open bookmarks etc). This is barely more than a purely cosmetic extension.
didnt work sucked beyond measure
Does not work on Google page ...funny
Can't do anything to fix Google's cr*p software engineering.
Thanks Stefanvd.net this is really helpful*****
Just an awful piece of code. All this blinking when browsing from one sight to another is major league annoying.
i hate Chrome because it doesn't have the "File Edit View etc." It tells you that you can add those things by clicking the square with the white cross and then clicking the "Proper Menu Bar is Off" to turn it on. Yeah?? That works some of the time, but like now, I have clicked it on and off and on again and those commands jsut do not appear. So, it only works sometimes, and besides, I want to have those things automatically appear when I bring up the website, I don't want to suddenly discover that they aren't there when I need them. And, what a waste to have to "Book Mark" things when I had plenty of "Favorites" in the old Google. So, when I wnat to save something, I have to bring the old Google up and then make the site a "Favorite" rather than start again with the Chrome "bookmarks". I know the engineers at Chrome know best and know what's good for me, but I would like to have had the option of just continuing with Google only so many sites don't support it and you're forced to use the burdensome Chrome. Well ... not really, there is Fire Fox as an easier alternative. Too bad this si a cry in the wilderness as the Chrome engineers know it is still best for me ....
What we want is for the Menu Bar to appear at the top and not just in some Black Icon with a Cross. Wasting of time to install. Will uninstall this extension. And will use back Firefox - better option than Google Chrome.
Sometimes on some stefanvd.net pages the menu bar will display properly under the existing chrome bookmarks toolbar, with an "x" exit button on the right end of the menu bar. However 99% of the time it will not display on any website. The extension icon is set to "Proper Menu Bar Is On", but the menu options "File", "Edit", "View", etc. are displayed in the extension button drop-down instead of on the page as a toolbar.
the worst! not worth downloading! forget about it !!
Very helpful!!
Terrible. Would not install so it would be up on top.
Does not work as advertised even after watching the video and following all the steps. Like others, no menu bar appears along the top of the Chrome browser itself. There is a dropdown listing of items when you click the black box; however, I would not categorize that as a "Menu Bar" at all. Any extension that takes this much time and effort only to wind up not working for several people for the same issue does not rate greater than two stars. A nice try, but obviously more testing is needed to solve this issue.
Worthless. I want the menu bar back that allowed me to email a story through my comcast account since I rarely use gmail. Firefox has Google Chrome beat by miles in ease of use. Stop fixing what was not broken!
IT DOESN'T WORK!
Works great no problem. Those that say can't see have to navigate to web page to use bar. Great add on....
Does not work. Does not appear above address bar. Clicked on it in Chrome extensions. Still does not work.
All this adds is a single button that CONTAINS the menu-bar I want. Why would any user need another drop-down tree inside another button? I have turned it on from the 'Proper Menubar' + symbol, which has not made any changes in the interface of any website I visit. I have gone through the settings and selected: Show the browser menu bar, as that is what I wanted. I have selected: Show the bar on all websites included not Google sites, because that's what I wanted from this extension. What I have is YET ANOTHER icon on my browser that opens a drop-down has all the useful things hidden in ANOTHER drop-down... The image on the front page shows an actual menubar that is underneath the address bar. Either explain how to achieve that, or remove the false image.
Followed instructions and menu bar only appeared once. How about giving us some real help without leaving out details or steps, and, please, provide links.
The copy and paste functions do not work. I copy using it and when I want to paste: nothing to paste!
this is not a menu bar! it's a list of favorite bookmarks. nor does it add on top like a menu. it's added in the browser.
can you fix it to work for the new gmail
Thanks Stefan! this is an incredibly helpful tool for chrome, I am new to the browser due to 10+ years of FF, the latest FF (V63.03) and the previous 4 versions are too buggy, crashes, hangs and the support is pathetic, I tried chrome for a few hours and struggled to get used to the iface BUT out of frustration decided to Try Chrome, it was great apart from one missing thing, the "Menu Bar" Thankfully Stefan has spent the time and coded this tiny trusted app/add on, It really is simple to use, Once installed at the top right of your screen you will see a BLACK square with a tiny white Cross icon right at the very top right of your Chrome page, Simply Click on that icon and at the top there is a RED banner stating " Propper menu bar is off" just click on that red banner and it turns Green PRESTO! its done...How cool is that, Thanks Stefan and IF any of you can help donate that would be appreciated as I am sure this took some time to code...Best wishes for Christmas 2018 KEITH G (England)
Doesn't work. No menu bar appears.
awful and difficult to uninstall
nice to use
Please see the firefox menu bar for elegant simplicity. The black bar is in the way and too busy.
Nice!
It's not the MENU bar I wanted. What I REALLY want is a toolbar like the Menu Bar in Firefox -- and along the TOP, not an all-in-one wrench/menu icon on the top right. "FILE; EDIT; VIEW; HISTORY; BOOKMARKS; TOOLS; HELP." I uninstalled this one.
It falsely advertises its functionality. You have to go through stacks of settings and advertising but you cannot even find out how to switch this thing on. What a crappy use interface design!
Yay Hurray Fantastic Great job. Thanks so much!
Nice toolbar. But I really don't want the black bar and all its social networking junk, which is why I turned off most of its headings. What I REALLY WANT is a toolbar like the Menu Bar in Firefox -- and along the TOP, not an all-in-one wrench/menu icon on the top right. This is a myth held by Google people: they think people want one menu button for everything. In fact, people don't, because simplifying the top level makes the lower levels more obscure, creating too many submenus and pull-down items. Better to have 4-6 main categories with menus under those, than a single oversimplified button with obtusely-named choices underneath it. In fact, it would work best with exactly the same menu choices as FF: File, Edit, View, etc -- absolutely no need to be creative (in fact, too much creativity requires a new user to climb the learning curve, and thus it is counterproductive -- ie. Windows 8 removing the Start Button is a classic example). Why not make one of THOSE toolbars? Just go rip off the exact same menu from FF, and set it up on Chrome. Much more useful than the black bar, particularly when you see all the FF users who come over to Chrome, but who only stick around for a few hours until they realize Chrome has no Menu Bar, and then subsequently uninstall Chrome. Making a Menu Bar would go a long way toward reeling in FF users.
You did a wonderful job with this extension!
does nothing.
It is Really Useful It bring back my old days
No menu bar at the top. They are all listed to the left-hand side and then a huge black box goes across the entire screen so I can't see the website I am on. Definitely not what is advertised.
Doesn't work. No menu bar to see even though it is switched on.
Not exactly what I wanted. I thought you would see a proper tab open that reads, file, print save, etc like a tab in Microsoft word.
Not at all or by any means a "Proper Menu Bar"....what a scam!
I really like what it does, but if this was a "Proper" Chrome menu bar, page content would start below it and not behind it. If you could make page content start below it and respect it as a menu bar, then it would be truly amazing, because that's the only flaw I can see with it.
It doesn't add a proper menu bar back to chrome, simple as that.
I love it ! Very useful
I always like this extension!
I don't really understand the point of this extension. I already have two black menu bars. I have one for the extension icons and one with all of my bookmarks. Nothing has really changed, except for another icon (Proper Menubar) being added to my menu bar.
Hi, Pretty nice concept, one thing that I think it would be great to add would be the ability to add your own custom links to the menubar. If this happened, I think that would be really awesome, and massively increase the usefulness of this extension. Overall at the moment it is pretty nice and clean, however lacks some of the functionality that I would like.
Actually as good or better that the original.
DUDE THIS IS AMAZING I have been looking for a way to get the old black menu bar google once had, this is one of the best options, I definitely recommend everyone to get this.
I've used this extension for quite a while. It's so handy and convenient.
love my ability to change colors
i like it...
Whoa! Thanks for making this ive been looking for something like this! But if you can remove the new gmail and images links that would be better.
Love It ! Thank's Stefan !!
I realise the page was only intended to open once, but it was opening multiple times on the same chrome browser, well after i'd first installed it. I must thank you for your support, and the technical solution you told me about seems like it will do the trick :D We have a great developer here!
Must have add-on perfect great job
It only works with your primary account. If you have multiple accounts, it still pulls up your Gmail or Contacts or whatever for your primary even after you switch accounts. I'll keep it for awhile in case this is fixed...
Does't work
It doesn't bring up the File, Tool, Edit, Actions buttons
