This extension is perfect but I notice some bugs: 1. It gets on the way whatever japanese text I am typing exp when the cursor is near the text 2. It often turns on the "hide definitions and show only reading" by itself. It's not like there is shortcut to it, right??
Love the app. but keyboard shortcut without clicking the icon would be super useful. Thank you.
Good for reading difficult Japanese words on the fly, but not that great for studying to put words into your long-term memory because there is no integration with Anki (AnkiConnect). If you can add Anki integration I would use this over Yomichan since the popup design is prettier.
Hey Erek, Is there a reason that rikaikun will not turn on sometimes even though it is toggled on? This happens to me often and it is quite annoying. I don't know if I need to restart my computer or something, but that would be a pain to have to do every time this problem occurs. Thanks!
I use this extension on a daily basis. It's extremely handy, and I enjoy it.
cool but maybe pls change the color of the english translations like i mean the text color because it blends w the blue background and i hardly can read it
I love this extension. Its super helpful. If you could get it to work on PDF files while in chrome, that would take away my only complaint.
Is it possible to enable text-to-speech, not automatically, but when I press a key? This is so it only pronounces the word when I want it to. Best is if the pronunciation could be repeated when my cursor is pointing at the word.
Pretty useful extension. For some reason, it won't let me translate phrases after a comma, so I'm forced to delete commas in sentences to use rikaikun to translate a word. Fixing this issue would be good for user experience.
No longer works on legacy versions of chrome before version ~90 or so. The way this extension works is that you need to click the icon to enable it, then hover over the kanji/kana that you want to read and provides several potential readings up to 4 character long or so. Very straightforward and does the job well.
Helpful, but they should allow users to bind the keys. When a page is full of text with nowhere to put your mouse and the Enter key is stuck shifting the dictionaries, it's infuriating. Please allow users to change the controls.
This is an absolute lifesaver. While I wish there was a slightly more comprehensive tutorial and list of commands in the options menu (I only discovered the names dictionary after coming back to the store page many months later), it does everything it needs to do and packs in so much functionality! While there are possibly some other quality of life changes that could be made, I don't think I can give this any less than 5*, especially seeing as it's totally free!
Absolutely amazing tool that made my life many times easier. However I think a font colour option would be helpful since the contrast is not ideal.
Only seems to work for Japanese websites, not Japanese text across the web in general; i.e. - doesn't translate if you're on an English site that uses Japanese text.
Love it!!! Very useful!!! Japanese salvation.
way too convenient to be true
I really like this extension, but it sometimes stops showing the English translations, so I have to remove the extension and then add it back again. This happens every couple weeks. ;(
Is good but doesn't seem to work with certain fonts.
Seriously the best Japanese learning extension I've ever used. It makes everything easier to study. Thank you so much!
Doesn't work. Nothing is happening.
Makes it really easy to go through a kanji heavy page. Thanks a million!
I love this extension, I've used it for years and it's helped me study so much. Big thank you to the creator <3
se vee muy interesante, ayuda muchisimo a la hora de aprender. ありがとうございました
Rikaikun has been a life saver for over a decade. I do have one problem... Recently it keeps resetting the highlight text setting, which is really annoying when you're trying to fill out a form and the text boxes keep losing focus. Not sure why this suddenly started happening, but it's the only problem I've ever had with the extension since it was first released.
This is amazing!(I would only work on adding popular authors’ and historical figures' names and book titles etc. to the database) (Also, when I try to copy paste with my keyboard, the extension bubble shows up, because I press SHIFT A or SHIFT V and then ENTER) Otherwise, this add-on saves lives. Thank you so much for the effort of making it!
Works Great But How I wish it had Romji like RikaiChamp has for FireFox, O well I don't use chrome much anyways. ツ
this is the best chrome extension i ever installed in my life. seriously. both in term of usefulness and quality. thank you very much.
Fantastic. One suggestion, it would be great it it could be disabled for cetain sites, instead of having to disable it manually. Thanks!
It gets the job done instantly. After moving to a NVMe SSD powered computer this extension starts up instantly. Now I'm able to use this in local .html files (like game manuals) just by activating all access rules in the extension config page of Opera GX. A cool feature will be... "Go to some portal repository to search the highlighted text and see its real usage" I mean... perform a "Example Search" search in Kanshudo.
Enormously helpful extension. At some point, when language-learning, textbooks stop becoming useful and you just need to read constantly, and this is an indispensable tool. That said, several very basic flaws that severely damage its functionality. 1) It never automatically loads upon start-up. 2) It insists on copy-pasting a definition (rather than the actual text), when I have never wanted to do that. And the definitions stick around even when you take your cursor away from the window, so the simple act of copy/pasting becomes a pain. There needs to be a single key that turns the whole extension on/off. 3) it gives multiple readings for words when only one is common. (Jisho.org properly gives the one most common pronunciation at the top and the others at the bottom.) This risks teaching users the wrong pronunciations for certain terms.
It unfortunately doesn't seem to work with Youtube (titles and comments), otherwise it is good.
works everytime and is very helpful when understanding kanji
It's a great tool if you're trying to read single kanji's, but it's difficult to use when hiraganas are mixed in the words.
Works great for most sites but for some reason doesn't work on twitter. Otherwise I love it. Please fix that problem!
Great, This is tool that I'm looking for. please keep develop it. love them.
すごい!
I just downloaded it, but it doesn't seem to work for me? I turned it on, and started highlighting kanji, but nothing seems to pop up...help please
It's alright. Doesn't show all the definitions of a word and has trouble figuring out words without kanji/problems figuring out where one word ends and another begins. Nowhere near as versatile or full of features as Firefox's rikaichan. This extension is just a bare minimum copy paste job, even after all these years. :/
I've been using Rikaikun for years and it works great. Only thing is that it's missing some newer vocabulary terms as well as some expanded definitions/translations. If Jisho.org was integrated into rikaikun, that would be perfect. Also please consider adding the pitch shift number found in some dictionaries that can help with pitch accent pronunciation! For those experiencing problems with it opening up, make sure your chrome is updated and try re-adding the extension.
powerful combo with Anki
I have using rikaikun for a couple of years now and I'm not going to stop any time soon. I use rikaikun to look up vocabulary and kanji. My Japanese have really improving thanks to rikaikun.
Really useful and saves my time to copy-and-paste to jisho or other translate/dict websites.
超好用!
いいね。
Love it normally, but recently it started not showing translation, just reading. Gives no English unless I press shift/enter which just gives me the meaning (and translation) of the first kanji, not the word/phrase. Not sure why...
too good
Probably my first review on Chrome store. I am learning Japanese, and this app is super helpful.
Please add Romaji support
It's pretty great. If only it offered romaji transcription, it would be perfect.
Really helps
Excellent app. A wall I had in learning Japanese was my vocabulary. Having this app installed allows me to practice reading in context without having to use an online dictionary like Jisho every 5 seconds. It is not 100% flawless. Just wanted to make sure that is known, Ctrl+C will take the whole dictionary definition instead of the highlighted text. Manually right clicking and selecting Copy bypasses the issue but of course that's substandard. Additionally, Rikaikun has difficulty on raw unformatted text. It will constantly snap to words if the cursor is in white space. Here is an example on some random lyrics: https://gyazo.com/93fdbea9f324e094657446efc10a860b I attempted to add breaks (newlines, tabs) between each line in the console but they didn't stop the issue. I don't know if it's an issue with Rikaikun or if some formatting could fix it. But otherwise the extremely limited and livable bugs, wonderful gem of an app. Developer clearly took a lot of care in making it.
Extremely helpful! I would suggest this for all Japanese learners
Very Nice. Thank you for porting this extension to the Chrome Web Browser
Rikaikun is very useful when reading newspaper articles etc. as I don't have to check a dictionary or skip every time there's a word I don't recognise. However, I've noticed a persistent problem - every few weeks or so, it just suddenly stops displaying English definitions, only displaying the kanji and onyomi/kunyomi when I hover over a word. I then need to remove and reinstall the extension and it starts working normally again. Toggling the on/off switch is also sometimes very slow and laggy or just plain doesn't work. So while I love Rikaikun in theory, in practice, I think it should work a bit more smoothly to earn 5 stars.
Thanks for this! Very helpful! But i have some troubles when i want to copy text, the whole dictionary is copied too with my text selection...
the only popup dictionary work with input text area, hhope you make another language like chinese and korean.
I like it but pressing on doesn't mean its on. it's annoying to have to press everytime i start up chrome, please fix this
Almost perfect, it does tell you the meaning of kanas and kanjis, but it does not do transliteration, or at least I didn't find it, so you will know what it means but you wont know the real word
Popular reading should be the first one.
لو سمحتم لا اعلم كيفيه الاستخدام فلقد قمت بتحميل التطبيق ولكن اليس من المفترض ان يعرض لي اسطر من الكانجي لامرر عليها واقراها فكيف ذلك؟ ارجو المساعده
Long startup lag. Often accidentally trigger hotkeys (which cannot be reassigned) when typing. Biggest problem I have though is it now no longer works inside Google documents. I do some translating (J->E) and used to get a lot of use from rikaikun when editing a Japanese document in Google docs. I don't know if this issue was caused by Chrome, Google docs, or some change in rikaikun, but this is enough for me to take off another star.
Thank you. Sooo helpful.
pretty good, I can read with having to copy/paste to google translate for the kanji
I used to use it all the time. Now nothing pops up at all. Great.
Its really the best app I found until now for Kanjis. Most other get the reading wrong. My only annoyance is that the popup window is too striking, it should have an option let it be a bit more transparent.
As someone who struggles with kanji, this is perfect! Works well on most sites, and the results are easy to read, although getting used to what all the information displayed means takes some getting used to.
Very useful when I'm reading long articles in Japanese rather than having to open up a Japanese dictionary. It even tells you what kind of conjugation the word is using and its other possibilities.
Copy/Paste is a problem! I don't have any real complaints about this extension, but I was wondering whether there had been an update recently that changed how copy-paste works with the extension. I feel like in the last month or two, hitting Cmd+C copies the dictionary entry for selected text. I know C is supposed to be the hotkey for copying to clipboard, but I'm getting really sick of selecting something, having the definition pop up, hitting Cmd+C and having the whole dictionary entry pasting instead of the word I selected. I've been using this extension for years without this problem, so what's up?
very helpful, thank you
すごいこのアプリ!本当に易しい読めます。A+
Learning Japanese, and only thing I don't have in Japanese is a large vocabulary, this is such a truly useful extension which already is helping me a lot as I learned more Japanese words today than I have in a week.
someone please update it it's open source
thank you for make Rikaikun. i love it
Great tool
Really useful when you need it and the clever identification of full words is fairly effective. Would be great if it has hotkey to disable and enable as clicking on the icon is a hassle at times.
great :) this helps me a lot reading
Excellent dictionary! easy to use and lookup the original form of Japanese vocabulary.
want japanese to thai
I'm glad my textbook showed me this extension. Kanji is so hard to learn but this makes it so I can still read lots of websites! I hear that the Firefox version has some very useful features like saving vocabulary. I'd love to see some of those here.
It's lacking 間違いない and 間違いなく. Could you guys include it? It's really fast, though. More than rikaichan... I like rikaikun.
Amazing extension for any Japanese student.
This app is so amazing and helpful :D
It doesn't work in chrome since a few days D,:, it's an extremely useful extension so it's a pain not be working ):
Extremely helpful!
Great add-on for learning Japanese. But can you make it turned on by default. It is a pain to turn it on everytime
Incredibly useful for browsing. It has a surprising amount of knowledge about specific areas. For example, knowing 圏 as "category" in the context of category theory.
This is a fantastic app. It's one of the best and in some cases it's a make or break extention when determining which computer to use for work. I'd even say I'm very grateful to the developers. That said, it works well on Firefox and only there. Its cousin's potential here in Chrome hasn't been realized. This is the only reason I have fully switched to Chrome. I wish it would equally as well on both browsers. It's a huge disappointment that it so underperforms on Chrome. If you haven't used it on Firefox, you haven't experienced the full power and magic of this extention. Again, to the developer(s), I am profoundly grateful for this extentions development as it's been a great help. I'd even pay for this extention on a yearly basis. But I couldn't in good conscience recommend its use on Chrome when it so underperforms compared to the same extension on Firefox.
Cannot turn it on on Chrome :(
This app got me really excited! It still does, but it doesn't seem to work on most sites, which is disappointing. The sites I was hoping this app would help me with, seem to be immune to it's power. If this app worked on all sites/documents etc, I would pay for it. I hope you find a way to fix this - お願いします!
It is useful of course, but it's so much worse than it's contemporary in Mozilla Firefox. On Rikaikun is slow to start up. It's almost instant in Mozilla. And recently, I've been having problems where it's only showing the reading of the word (that is, it shows how to pronounce it) and doesn't show the meanings of the words, which defeats the purpose. This needs to be fixed!
Very useful.
when it works it is good and really is helping. when it works, that is. bcs 80% of the time i can't even turn on the feature
This has got to be the most helpful thing I have encountered thus far in my study of Japanese.
It's great, but I need it to show the pronunciation in romaji, not hiragana. It does everything except that.
スピードさんの理解君は本当に便利だ!もうちょっと早くスタートする方が良いんじゃないかなと思っています。
MUST HAVE!!!!
great for reading
good port, but would really need the save vocabulary to file feature the firefox version has.
my favourite
The translation works just fine, but the extension has SO MUCH TROUBLE turning on that I can't use it maybe 80-90% of the time.
Simply the best way to learn japanese and read japanese articles. PERIOD!
