I tried replacing "."="!?" but instead it just replaces every space with "!?". Other than that it worked fine and I had a lot of fun.

Very nice... worth the install. Laughing for days. Don't forget to turn it off if you're doing something serious, though... it can get confusing. Still. Very good.

Matthew Lopez February 12th, 2021

It makes the Internet a stranger and better place. There are a couple problems, though, but they are all possible to fix. The first problem is that switching 2 words doesn't work. For example, when you set it to change minute to year and year to minute, it just changes both minute and year to minute. This can be fixed by adding a 0-length whitespace character to the text, like this one: (‎). This can also fix the recursive "physically physically expands" issue, as others have noted. The second problem is that it does not work with 0 web sites in the blocklist, but that can be fixed by adding gibberish to the blocklist. The third problem is that it does not have the substitutions 3 comic by default, but they are easy to add.

Good idea and execution but it slowed down Twitter and Facebook to a crawl, made them basically unusable on a powerful desktop... Fix your extension.

I really love this extension. It's great... although, I have to admit, if you leave it running forever and forget it's running there are times when it can leave you seriously confused, especially when measurements are switched around. Enjoy.

This is easily the best extension to install on people's browsers when they aren't looking. My co-working genuinely believes Doug Ford won an eating contest just before the Ontario election.

Please add highlighting/mouseover text to changed words. Would be *super* helpful. Sometimes it's funny, but sometimes it's just confusing.

Very fun to read. You're looking stuff up for a research thing and you come across a story about an uncontrollably swerving atomic cat. Very nice. Only problem is that the "expand->physically expand" substitution recurses so you get things in the vein of "physically physically physically physically expands".

This extension is a lot of fun, but I did find one minor bug. When replacing something partially with itself, for example 'expands' => 'physically expands', the replacement runs multiple times and you end up with 'physically physically physically expands'.

Throughout this year, I've been dealing with triggers, and I have used this extension to remove triggering words from websites. It made me feel so much safer browsing the web, and has saved me from having a bad reaction to something written on a webpage many, many times. It's helped me so much and actually allowed me to use the internet without needing to be worried about what if I happen across something triggering, because I know that this extension will remove it and I won't have to read it. I can't recommend it enough, I'm very thankful that I had this to help me through this year.

Joshua manders-jones September 23rd, 2017

Makes pretty much everything a lot more interesting to read. However I would like to point out that the translation for expand -> physically expand is recursive, so it ends up looking more like: expand -> physically physically physically physically expand

Tyler Szabo September 14th, 2017
Tyler Szabo

Funny but ultimately a pain to use. It will cause issues with text boxes where your cursor will jump to the front when the page is updated. It's a cute gag but if used will more likely break pages (even on pages that lack any words that it would substitute).

Ryan Murray September 4th, 2017

This is a very fun extension. However, the main problem I have with it is that turning it off requires refreshing the page. Other than that, awesome extension!

This is an absolute must-have if you read xkcd. It doesn't quite work 100%, but it's really funny. Just make sure to organize the site blacklist before you do any research!

Tom Smith June 9th, 2017

Massively slows down your browser. You have to wait for every bit of a page to fully load, then the XKCD extension completely freezes up Chrome for about 4 seconds while it does its work. Not worth the giggle.

After I added some substitutions of my own: -----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:----- UK Conservatives' lead halved ahead of eating contest, according to this psychic reading [Image caption: British Lord Theresa May campaigning ahead of the 2017 General Eating contest] Lord Theresa May's Conservatives' lead over the opposition Labour Party halved to 9 percent in a Survation telephone psychic reading published on Monday, adding to signs that the eating contest race is tightening ahead of the June 8 pokémon. -----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:----- As you can see, I'm having fun with this. And I have'nt even had the extention for more than two hours yet. EDIT: A suggestions: Make the extension work when there are few/no websites in the blacklist. I prefer this extension to function on ALL websites, and then just have it off when I'm doing something serious.

So I was messing around with the settings, and then, inspiration hit! I changed "xkcd.com" in the blacklist to "/xkcd.com" so the what if pages would be subject to the extension, and included all forms of "expand" in the extension settings. Then I go to what if: expanding earth, and it was hilarious!

a great extension but could be improved > custom words I add with the blue + do not get replaced. I've saved, the website I'm using it on is not in my blacklisted bar, tried shutting down chrome and restarting, etc. nope. The ones that came with the extension worked fine though > has a bad relarionship with apostrophes. ex: If I want to change "trump's wife" to "the supreme shitlord's minion", it won't let me. Same goes for all apostrophes

Maxwell Anselm June 23rd, 2016
Maxwell Anselm

Great interface, terrible implementation. The algorithm just naively does repeated find-and-replace iterations, so a replacement like "expands"->"physically expands" instead becomes "physically physically physically physically expands". You can work around this by putting a "zero-width space" inside the substituted word. Press Ctrl+Shift+U type 200B and press enter to insert one.

Gaston Marian June 21st, 2016
Gaston Marian

You can avoid the recursion by putting a blank character into the replaced expand/s and surprising either hold [alt]+[+] and type [0127] or copy/paste these following characters and remove the greater than / less than symbols ><

- Works perfectly. - Font and design of config page is a charm. - Disable at a click for "serious mode". - Configuration saves automatically and instantly; config can also be changed as a text file. - Edits, adds and deletes substitutions instantly. - Did I mention that the config page is designed really well? - Contains a blacklist function! - Able to revert to default config if you ever mess up. If only all extensions were designed like this.

A while ago I had to do a report for school on Pope Julius the second (I think it was the second...). I looked up some stuff about him, and came upon a lot of info about his eating contest. What? I thought it was some sort of special papal thing. I search "Papal Eating Contest". Nothing. I assume that either some wikipedia editor had a fun time or it's a not commonly used term. Fast forward a few days, I have to do some more research, and I see something about the eating contest again, on a different website. Still have no idea what it is. I eventually turn in my project, and everything goes fine. Then, a few weeks later, as the election started going on, I was looking up polls for Trump. Then, I saw it again: Eating Contest. And finally, I realized...Election===Eating Contest. Thanks, XKCD substitutions.

The only problem is that I can't make multiple alternatives for the same word. for instance, if I don't want words to be too repetitive, I could make "car" either show up as "teleportation machine" or "mothership". Also, if you compare this to Gizoogle, you can obviously see that Gizoogle somehow does a better job at replacing words. I dunno how, but I'm just pointing that out.

Evan Manrow January 5th, 2016

Don't get me wrong- this is pretty sick. But I've run into some problems: (1) there seems to be a maximum amount of substitutions. Once my list gets too full, it stops saving new ones, and stops running the plugin altogether. (2) the capitalization is wonky- it steals the capitalization of the source words regardless of how long the replacement words are, and regardless of how you try to capitalize them in the substitution list. (3) the substitutions modify each other, so you can't do word swaps or substitute words that are added by other substitutions without creating loops. They should just act on the original page content.

As someone else said, the capitalisation goes a bit nutty at times. But still, there are a few gems that pop up and utterly confuse me until I remember I'd installed this extension, which has accounted for many lols. For example: “At the moment I would say we wouldn’t win the general eating contest, if the general eating contest was called today,” said Phillips, who was elected as MP for Birmingham Yardley in May’s general eating contest.

I've had a ton of fun with this... since the news has been so depressing lately I decided to add a custom replacement .. "Ebola" is now "Zombie" .. "President" is now "Bigshot" ... "Barack" is now "The Rock" and "Gun" is now "Rooty tooty point and shooty" The news is far more interesting now :) thank you for this.. It's mixed on how well it works on facebook.. it works in comments, doesn't seem to work in posts.. at least not consistently! but I can forgive that, this thing is so much fun. I'm not affiliated but I would also recommend "Cloud to Butt Plus" if you like this one... it does a bit more than just replacing "cloud" with "butt" .. so it's a fun addition... storing your files in google's butt is always interesting.. again.. THANKS for this.. And yes if you forget you have this installed, it can make things a little confusing at first :) especially since I also replaced "Whitehouse" with "Presidential Crib" ... so when I read about "The Rock Obama" hanging at "The Presidential Crib" it's a bit disorienting at first ;) but WORTH IT
