I tried replacing "."="!?" but instead it just replaces every space with "!?". Other than that it worked fine and I had a lot of fun.
Very nice... worth the install. Laughing for days. Don't forget to turn it off if you're doing something serious, though... it can get confusing. Still. Very good.
It makes the Internet a stranger and better place. There are a couple problems, though, but they are all possible to fix. The first problem is that switching 2 words doesn't work. For example, when you set it to change minute to year and year to minute, it just changes both minute and year to minute. This can be fixed by adding a 0-length whitespace character to the text, like this one: (). This can also fix the recursive "physically physically expands" issue, as others have noted. The second problem is that it does not work with 0 web sites in the blocklist, but that can be fixed by adding gibberish to the blocklist. The third problem is that it does not have the substitutions 3 comic by default, but they are easy to add.
Reading the news have became my favorite part of my day
now i read news
Would be nice if it somehow highlighted what was removed. But really funny otherwise!
All of this is yes.
Good idea and execution but it slowed down Twitter and Facebook to a crawl, made them basically unusable on a powerful desktop... Fix your extension.
I really love this extension. It's great... although, I have to admit, if you leave it running forever and forget it's running there are times when it can leave you seriously confused, especially when measurements are switched around. Enjoy.
Amazing, even though you can't delete substitutions.
It turned NASA into Space core
This is easily the best extension to install on people's browsers when they aren't looking. My co-working genuinely believes Doug Ford won an eating contest just before the Ontario election.
Please add highlighting/mouseover text to changed words. Would be *super* helpful. Sometimes it's funny, but sometimes it's just confusing.
is there a substitution limit? i want to make an entire substitution language.
Very fun to read. You're looking stuff up for a research thing and you come across a story about an uncontrollably swerving atomic cat. Very nice. Only problem is that the "expand->physically expand" substitution recurses so you get things in the vein of "physically physically physically physically expands".
I love this. I am never going to unintall this.
This extension is a lot of fun, but I did find one minor bug. When replacing something partially with itself, for example 'expands' => 'physically expands', the replacement runs multiple times and you end up with 'physically physically physically expands'.
best thing ever!!
This is AWESOME! Entertaining for hours!
Throughout this year, I've been dealing with triggers, and I have used this extension to remove triggering words from websites. It made me feel so much safer browsing the web, and has saved me from having a bad reaction to something written on a webpage many, many times. It's helped me so much and actually allowed me to use the internet without needing to be worried about what if I happen across something triggering, because I know that this extension will remove it and I won't have to read it. I can't recommend it enough, I'm very thankful that I had this to help me through this year.
Makes pretty much everything a lot more interesting to read. However I would like to point out that the translation for expand -> physically expand is recursive, so it ends up looking more like: expand -> physically physically physically physically expand
Funny but ultimately a pain to use. It will cause issues with text boxes where your cursor will jump to the front when the page is updated. It's a cute gag but if used will more likely break pages (even on pages that lack any words that it would substitute).
This is a very fun extension. However, the main problem I have with it is that turning it off requires refreshing the page. Other than that, awesome extension!
This is an absolute must-have if you read xkcd. It doesn't quite work 100%, but it's really funny. Just make sure to organize the site blacklist before you do any research!
Massively slows down your browser. You have to wait for every bit of a page to fully load, then the XKCD extension completely freezes up Chrome for about 4 seconds while it does its work. Not worth the giggle.
After I added some substitutions of my own: -----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:----- UK Conservatives' lead halved ahead of eating contest, according to this psychic reading [Image caption: British Lord Theresa May campaigning ahead of the 2017 General Eating contest] Lord Theresa May's Conservatives' lead over the opposition Labour Party halved to 9 percent in a Survation telephone psychic reading published on Monday, adding to signs that the eating contest race is tightening ahead of the June 8 pokémon. -----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:-----:----- As you can see, I'm having fun with this. And I have'nt even had the extention for more than two hours yet. EDIT: A suggestions: Make the extension work when there are few/no websites in the blacklist. I prefer this extension to function on ALL websites, and then just have it off when I'm doing something serious.
Really really love this one. That feeling you are reading something seriously and suddenly you see "spaaaace instead of "space" is just hilarious.
i was realllllly confused about why someone stole a cat until i remembered i had this on
Pls add more words
The W3C Airbender Recommendation improved my day by 42.23%. 10/10 would buy again
Doesn't work with colors. Also doesn't work on websites and it becomes annoying and frustrating
So I was messing around with the settings, and then, inspiration hit! I changed "xkcd.com" in the blacklist to "/xkcd.com" so the what if pages would be subject to the extension, and included all forms of "expand" in the extension settings. Then I go to what if: expanding earth, and it was hilarious!
Could you possibly add support for Cyrillic symbols? When I try to add words written in Cyrillic to the list, it doesn't work. :(
The customizations were the whole reason I added this extension, but they don't work.
Amusing to read recipes with :D
Please add Gnome Ann
a great extension but could be improved > custom words I add with the blue + do not get replaced. I've saved, the website I'm using it on is not in my blacklisted bar, tried shutting down chrome and restarting, etc. nope. The ones that came with the extension worked fine though > has a bad relarionship with apostrophes. ex: If I want to change "trump's wife" to "the supreme shitlord's minion", it won't let me. Same goes for all apostrophes
Great interface, terrible implementation. The algorithm just naively does repeated find-and-replace iterations, so a replacement like "expands"->"physically expands" instead becomes "physically physically physically physically expands". You can work around this by putting a "zero-width space" inside the substituted word. Press Ctrl+Shift+U type 200B and press enter to insert one.
You can avoid the recursion by putting a blank character into the replaced expand/s and surprising either hold [alt]+[+] and type [0127] or copy/paste these following characters and remove the greater than / less than symbols ><
I forgot it was on and I was wondering what part is a leopard on a laptop... that was when I realized I have tricked myself for days. XD
Replace "Google" with "my cat". Your life will never be better.
It gets recursive a bit. Expands becomes "Physically expands" which then becomes Physically physically expands" etc
It allows you to configure new substitutions. This made it for me.
- Works perfectly. - Font and design of config page is a charm. - Disable at a click for "serious mode". - Configuration saves automatically and instantly; config can also be changed as a text file. - Edits, adds and deletes substitutions instantly. - Did I mention that the config page is designed really well? - Contains a blacklist function! - Able to revert to default config if you ever mess up. If only all extensions were designed like this.
xkcd substitutions 3? also website -> wobsite & blog -> blag
Boring: News about the election Funny: Turning on this extension and having a laugh Hilarious: Forgetting to turn it off and wondering what the hell is going on
Makes the internet a fun place. The options to exclude sites of your choice and adding your own substitution makes it even better.
Wikipedia: "An eating contest is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Eating contests have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century." I love xkcd.
I can't wait for the latest comic to be added. Three cheers for the author!
Makes the news actually enjoyable/tolerable! And with the custom replacements I don't have to wait for an update to add the new ones from http://xkcd.com/1679/ as of time of this review
Super funny. Kind of confusing at first, especially with all the presidential campaign stuff going on, but once you get used to it it's just hilarious.
great stuff! pls add the latest ones from today's comic soon!
awesome .
does not update with new rules.
If we could be able to set the capitalisation ourselves rather than depend on what the text being replaced uses, that would be great
Good, but too many extraneous substitutions. Can I have a wipe all button please?
So, after some custom settings, this appeared on the internet: The official homepage of Elf-lord The Zodiac killer of Texas. Perfection.
A while ago I had to do a report for school on Pope Julius the second (I think it was the second...). I looked up some stuff about him, and came upon a lot of info about his eating contest. What? I thought it was some sort of special papal thing. I search "Papal Eating Contest". Nothing. I assume that either some wikipedia editor had a fun time or it's a not commonly used term. Fast forward a few days, I have to do some more research, and I see something about the eating contest again, on a different website. Still have no idea what it is. I eventually turn in my project, and everything goes fine. Then, a few weeks later, as the election started going on, I was looking up polls for Trump. Then, I saw it again: Eating Contest. And finally, I realized...Election===Eating Contest. Thanks, XKCD substitutions.
I was browsing Amazon for mechanical keyboards and thought "the fuq is this leopard" so I thought it was a new mechanical switches... SO its a pretty good extension
Suddenly, all the election cycle "news" I've been trying to avoid is now the most entertaining part of my day. Thanks!
I added a bunch of work-specific replacements. Can't stop laughing at our internal reports...
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas
Works quite well as a base application. Perhaps add the latest set as well: http://xkcd.com/1625/
in the news it says atomic cats heres the news: In the news Image for the news result Here's How Atomic Cats Will Cause the Next Oil Crisis Bloomberg - 2 days ago Battery prices fell 35 percent last year and are on a trajectory to make unsubsidized atomic ... 400mph or bust: Meet the VBB-3, the world's fastest atomic cat Ars Technica - 13 hours ago The 2020s Could Be the Decade When Atomic Cats Take Over MIT Technology Review - 5 hours ago More news for atomic
The only problem is that I can't make multiple alternatives for the same word. for instance, if I don't want words to be too repetitive, I could make "car" either show up as "teleportation machine" or "mothership". Also, if you compare this to Gizoogle, you can obviously see that Gizoogle somehow does a better job at replacing words. I dunno how, but I'm just pointing that out.
This makes life more good.
Love it! Most recently I changed "Kanye" to "a rabbit" and "Yeezy" to "a very determined rabbit" and that's been big fun. It doesn't work perfectly on facebook, though, and sometimes the pronunciation is weird.
Sometimes, the little things make a day great. Nothing like reading bout Elf-Lord Bernie Sanders to brighten up my day.
It works brilliantly! You can add/remove word pairs in the settings screen. Wish it had a way to export my settings so I could sync my various computers...
btw there's a new one: http://xkcd.com/1625/ if you could implement these that would fantastic!
The word you are looking for is "affect" not "effect" "While this extension tries not to effect things like login forms or emails" -> this means it is trying to not create login forms or send emails. The typo is probably calculated to rile up grammar nazis like myself.
It's like "cloud to butt plus" except you can also set your own substitutes!
Perfect. Now the new substitutions from http://xkcd.com/1625/ should be added.
it changes all the text and more that I didn't know about, love it. looking up The Force Awakens is my favorite so far
I love it! Would be awesome if these could also be added: https://xkcd.com/1625/
As a xkcd person, love the geeky translations, a true joy in the news is finnaly coming!
xD
ISIS is now YMCA.
This extension is so much fun. Please update for XKCD 1625 and maybe even allow for custom substitutions or modes.
Star wars: the Horse awakens. That is all.
Don't get me wrong- this is pretty sick. But I've run into some problems: (1) there seems to be a maximum amount of substitutions. Once my list gets too full, it stops saving new ones, and stops running the plugin altogether. (2) the capitalization is wonky- it steals the capitalization of the source words regardless of how long the replacement words are, and regardless of how you try to capitalize them in the substitution list. (3) the substitutions modify each other, so you can't do word swaps or substitute words that are added by other substitutions without creating loops. They should just act on the original page content.
Star Wars: The Horse Awakens >mfw
There's a new substitution comic today! You should add it to the extension! http://xkcd.com/1625/
Brilliant! Please add a feature to export and import. I'd love to share lists with friends.
I love this. I was doing some training classes for Taser body cameras, and in our retention schedule, we had a classification of "Use of Force." It wasn't until the 5th training class until someone asked me what a "Use of Horse" was. Please update it for the new http://xkcd.com/1625
Doesnt work
Really wish there was a way to control capitalization so that "CD" becomes "technology bagel" instead of "TEchnology bagel". Otherwise, perfectly happy using Basebook while eating a bendy mint (candy cane).
As someone else said, the capitalisation goes a bit nutty at times. But still, there are a few gems that pop up and utterly confuse me until I remember I'd installed this extension, which has accounted for many lols. For example: “At the moment I would say we wouldn’t win the general eating contest, if the general eating contest was called today,” said Phillips, who was elected as MP for Birmingham Yardley in May’s general eating contest.
This works the best of the text substitution extensions that i've found. the capitalization is a little weird, worDs CoMe ouT lIkE thiS sometimes which is annoying but it blocked out the text i didn't want to see so good enough.
This is completely nerdy in the most awesome way.
I love this extension, a joy. Super easy to turn on/off and add new substitutions. The only issue I have is some substitutions come back with weird capitalisation... For instance 'Harry Potter' > 'Wandboy' ends up as 'WandboY' etc.
This becomes infinitely better when you forget you have it, and a science article suddenly turns into a discussion about SPAAACE and G-Horses.
oh my god- the elf-lords of atomic power have won the eating contest!!!!
Very fun to forget about.
Don't visit the internet without it.
This does not work...
Love it, although it seems to have stopped working.
Did not warn for tornados
Perfect for a little laugh every once in a while, when I read articles about how to root my Pokédex, watch Youtube videos about a man dressed as a bat or about the new Star Wars: The Horse awakens. I'm also much more interested in brute horse attacks now and how much spaaaaace I have left on Dropbox.
Just watched the trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: the Horse Awakens. 5/5.
I've had a ton of fun with this... since the news has been so depressing lately I decided to add a custom replacement .. "Ebola" is now "Zombie" .. "President" is now "Bigshot" ... "Barack" is now "The Rock" and "Gun" is now "Rooty tooty point and shooty" The news is far more interesting now :) thank you for this.. It's mixed on how well it works on facebook.. it works in comments, doesn't seem to work in posts.. at least not consistently! but I can forgive that, this thing is so much fun. I'm not affiliated but I would also recommend "Cloud to Butt Plus" if you like this one... it does a bit more than just replacing "cloud" with "butt" .. so it's a fun addition... storing your files in google's butt is always interesting.. again.. THANKS for this.. And yes if you forget you have this installed, it can make things a little confusing at first :) especially since I also replaced "Whitehouse" with "Presidential Crib" ... so when I read about "The Rock Obama" hanging at "The Presidential Crib" it's a bit disorienting at first ;) but WORTH IT
