It doesn't work in MS Edge Chromium based browser.
does what it's supposed to. afaik isn't triggering the read receipts by scanning my emails or anything, but if your work is highly confidential it's safer to not use 3rd party extensions.
practically useless now. kept getting disabled by itself.
A must have extension. thank you!
Does it permanently remove spam?
Doesn't work :( Mailtrack still detects that e-mails were opened.
Didn't work. I don't know why it didn't work. I installed it on Chrome, I checked my gmail. I know I've got emails/spam with trackers in there, but nothing was flagged. I closed and reopened Chrome. Nothing. I also installed Trocker and the same non-result. I know that the advertising emails from one place is definitely tracking me because when I don't open their emails, they email me about not opening them. But even though there's an advertising email in my inbox, nothing is flagged. I'm very disappointed, and have uninstalled.
Love this plugin, seems to have stopped working recently (1/22/21).
Great extension, however, it stopped working with a recent Chrome or Mac OS release (12/2020).
Works OK, but the UglyEmail icon is too big for Compact View in GMail, so it causes line heights to increase whenever the icon is displayed - a pain in the butt when trying to click on a message halfway down the screen. Plugin disabled in order to conserve my sanity. I do wish that there were an option to either not display the icon or display a less intrusively sized icon.
Mind-blowing!
good and effective
It slows down the inbox when enabled.
Love the concept, unfortunately just doesn't work.
This is very useful! I appreciate getting my privacy back. The only issue I have is that when I click on an email action (e.g., delete as the little trash can) on the home screen, the email is opened instead. Not a big issue because I can delete the email inside it, but still kind of strange this extension breaks that feature. Also, a question. GMass is implementing better tracking pixels (https://www.gmass.co/blog/tracking-pixel-blockers/). How are you going to block those?
Does not work
I used to have to weed out from 16 to 22 pieces of suspect mail daily. That's in the past. At first I wondered if somehow my Secure ware (ESET Security suite) was doing it but no, when I shut off Ugly Mail to test, the pile of..."stuff" was back. Ugly Email was filtering out the stuff that was perhaps less than honest... So I'm happy. I have less garbage to throw out daily and have a much smaller Email stack to sort through every day. No, Ugly Email isn't perfect, but it sure comes close.
I have been using this one for 2 years. Quite good! I really hate people those who track email reading, that is against privacy.
Gmail inbox formatting is incorrectly displayed when Ugly Mail extension is enabled. Disabling extension until issue is fixed.
nice
This extension completely ruins the formatting on my gmail inbox. Subject lines are unreadable.
Something seems to have changed with the July 2018 update that causes my gmail inbox to be formatted incorrectly. Everything gets pushed over to the left hand side of the screen. Disabling this addon solves the issue/
When enabled, this extension appears to cause right-clicks to delay about 20 seconds. In the console, there are several hundred errors along the lines of "Could not send the message "log", error: RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded". When I try and contact, there is only a privacy page that says "contact us", but no way to actually make contact. I am somewhat concerned by this and have disabled the extension for now, which has also made right-click work again.
Does Ugly Email work for Google's Inbox e-mail program or does it only work for Gmail?
I have used this for a long time now and find it very helpful, especially at this time when there are so many companies promoting seminars, symposia and political agendas.
Wish I could use it in inbox as well
Just downloaded to test against an email tracking app I use called Rocket Bolt. Not only did Ugly Email not notify me that the email was being tracked, I actually got a notification from Rocket Bolt that my email was read without me opening it! Which means that this extension is reading emails without my consent. I tested it multiple times and it happened after every one of them. I highly recommend not installing this app and to remove it if you already have!
I must echo another review from 2016, "how can I get it to discern between emails that are tracking me and emails that I track? I can't." Ugly Email let's me know that I am tracking emails... Which looks and feels redundant and messy. It also appears to not always work accurately. The Ugly Email eye icon will appear and disappear on the very same email — this happens to MANY emails sent to me by clients. This has me totally unsure of who is actually using tracking software and who isn't.
Does not block pixels. Tested with multiple accounts, using Yesware. Yesware was still able to track every time each email was opened. Does show whether emails are being tracked right in your inbox (so you can decide if you want to open it or not). However, upon downloading UglyMail, I restarted Chrome, and opened my gmail account to find 11 emails had been opened "by sender / someone nearby". I did not open these. UglyMail is snooping. It also breaks gmail. Loads many emails slowly or not at all, and breaks various links within them. Do not recommend.
WARNING....Check out your Chrome Dev Tools Console and watch how this performs. I had many, many errors with Ugly mail.
Works as advertised.
Works only on one of my inboxes. I don't know how to make it work on all.
Works as advertised.
Very unreliable response. It may detect a tracker in an email. An hour later, it reports the same email as safe!
Useful in concept, except breaks Gmail for me. Lots of stuck on "loading" issues where only refreshing the page fixes it. Also slowed Gmail way down overall.
It only works if you have set your gmail preferences to allow downloading of images by default. Otherwise nothing gets detected in the mailbox. Unfortunately that's not much use because the risk of real spam is far more likely to come from image downloads rather than beacon pixels which are used by marketing companies.
Works, no slowness, but um, how can I get it to discern between emails that are tracking me and emails that I track? I can't. Would be nice for the app developer to do this.
Doesn't seem to be working... in the last month, I haven't had a single notification even on spam mail, plus it drastically slows down gmail.
Gmail would hang or freeze in Chrome; this went on for months. Emails would disappear without sending; inbox would not load. Google even locked my Gmail account three times because of excessive activity. Disabling the UglyEmail extension fixed the problems instantly.
Recently it's not working with my chrome browser.. :(
CAUSES PROBLEMS. For months I was wondering what caused the infinite loading times and failed email deliveries for Gmail on my Chrome browser (Firefox worked fine), and it was in fact this extension. Although conceptually useful, not being able to send or read email properly makes this extension utterly broken.
Keeps locking up GMail, upon opening emails I get a "Loading" message which never disappears and the interface stop responding to navigation.
Causes Gmail to constantly hang at "Loading...".
It slowed Gmail down to the point of being unusable.
I finally removed this. It does find and label the emails that have tracking images. But as was mentioned, it slows down Gmail. I have been getting "Loading.." messages that hang Gmail until I reload it. Very annoying. I'm pretty sure it's related to this Extension. The little value it adds isn't worth the potential hassle. Older review: why is this needed (except to identify potentially ugly trackers)? I read about this on Wired.com, but then I read Google's help page for Gmail and images. It seems that Gmail blocks these things magically already. I'd like to better understand why this is needed, given that: "Some senders try to use externally linked images in harmful ways, but Gmail takes action to ensure that images are loaded safely. Gmail serves all images through Google’s image proxy servers and transcodes them before delivery to protect you in the following ways: Senders can’t use image loading to get information like your IP address or location. Senders can’t set or read cookies in your browser. Gmail checks your images for known viruses or malware. In some cases, senders may be able to know whether an individual has opened a message with unique image links. As always, Gmail scans every message for suspicious content and if Gmail considers a sender or message potentially suspicious, images won’t be displayed and you’ll be asked whether you want to see the images." https://support.google.com/mail/answer/145919?hl=en
Maybe it works, but it slows down Gmail too much. Perhaps it's conflicting with other plugins but it's annoying.
Good to know if emails are being tracked. However I wish to read what's inside that emails under protection by trimming out those tracking temperarily and then block all of them in future. Besides, loading of Gmail page turns to be slow now.
My gmail would become inoperable with the message 'Loading' at the top of the window.
I have a hard time believing none of the email in my spam folder is tracking whether I open or not. We're always warned that even opening an email lets spammers know you're a real account, and ensures you will get more. Now that I can block spam messages from even reaching me in Gmail, I was going to just open ones that weren't tracking me in order to block them...I guess I'll find out if I get a ton more all of the sudden whether they're really tracking me or not.
It seems to do it's job.
Works very well
Very useful: works pretty good
good i new they can help me google and this ap helps people out in this world google is the future
good
Messed up my start pages and added it's own, don't add this junk on your chrome.
Seems to work fine with updated extension, mostly tracked emails are unimportant and from my Promotions tab. Fortunately my important emails aren't tracked.
Didn't work... now m going to remove this useless extension..
Does not appear to work. I have no 'eye' on any of my emails even though I know some are being tracked by Mailchimp and Sidekick.
This no longer appears to work. I had originally seen the 'eye' next to many of my emails, they no longer appear.
great
Good..
Does it work for Bananatag tracked emails? It didn't work for me.
Doesn't work (or rather stopped working). Had some emails show the "evil eye" but no email currently showing any tracking although I know they contain tracking.
Does not do a thing here: Chrome Version 41.0.2272.118 (64-bit) Yosemite 10.10.3 But perhaps out of the thousands of emails, there are no trackers?
good app! Thank you!
good app !
Didn't work. I had a black theme for my gmail, but changed it to light. However, I still don't get notifications. I have some email from MailChimp and it doesn't show me that it's got a tracker in it. However, if I use PixelBlock, it actually shows me AND blocks the tracker from MailChimp. Curious as to why this doesn't work for me..
I'm giving it five stars, because it is a much-needed plugin. It does have a few kinks that need to be ironed out before it's actually useful in day-to-day life.
if only it could strip out the tracking images.
never worked, using ubuntu 14, this is what my console says: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'indexOf' of null
Very useful: works pretty good, hope it will come for other email clients as well
How can I get graphics to show up on my email? They are all gone now that I have installed this.
works poorly with dark/black backgrounds
This broke Drive (it corrupted Google Sheets). Not worth the hassle until they fix it.
I have to refresh Gmail every time for it to update the icon on new mail.
Doesn't adjust to mail with a black background. Ironic how you have to allow a program to trace your mail to find out if your mail is being traced.
interesting so see, who is embedding trackers... Got two 'plain mails from a friend, one from an university'provider and one from a commercial provider. The comemrcial provider seems pretty interested in their customers and their communication partners while the university is pretty agnostic ;)
UglyEmail is a practical tool to let the user know what emails are being tracked. Although it doesn't actively prevent them from tracking, it alerts the user which emails are being tracked. Definitely worth adding to your Chrome tool belt.
Very useful.
