It stopped working a couple weeks ago, Ive reinstalled cleared cache, everything still doesnt work.

going to replace this extension with a better one. i understand that there are multiple definitions for certain words but i am often shown the least relevant or least used definition which is extremely frustrating and time wasting.

Has all the definitions offered by google but more from the Definio database, plus shortened notes from wikipedia. Microsoft Edge has a much nicer implementation and experience. Google Dictionary has no Right-Click context menu option. Edge adds it to the Right-Click context menu as "Define word/phrase" (among other options like Search, Translate, Read aloud, etc). And if you double-click or highlight a word in Edge, it provides a subtle "..." popup that lets you easily choose Define (as well as more), which fades away if you don't use it. Google's implementation is EXTREMELY distracting and requires you to set a keyboard trigger key if you don't want it popping up every time you highlight a word or double click something to perform a selection. Then, if you set a keyboard trigger, you can no longer access it via mouse alone. Google even recognizes this annoyance, since they built in a tip that pops up after the 4th time suggesting you create a trigger key. Edge also provides more than just the definition and audio play, but also multiple meanings, synonyms, examples, and copy. Neither Google nor Edge provide Origin of word initially. This one gets bonus points for Instant Translation of foreign words (Edge doesn't), as well as Google's MORE always returns a Definition, whereas Edge's "more" is just a Search. 2 star rating means it's better than Chrome's complete lack of Define (0 stars), but the company's products are starting of feel dated and inefficient as the world evolves.

Was working fine up until a few days ago, now just says searching. 1 star. Fix it.

TLDR Review: I switched to: Instant Dictionary by GoodWordGuide.com and it works, just like Google Dictionary used to. Review: I have given this extension 5 stars before, but it no longer works. Hence the low score. I've done everything possible. Update Chrome, delete cookies, cache for "All Time", uninstalled, reinstalled (both the extension AND Chrome itself), turned off ALL other extensions. At best it works 1 time, upon a complete and total wipe of everything Chrome and starting completely over. Re-open Chrome and it instantly doesn't work again.

Doesn't work at all for me on my Pixelbook Go. I tried various options and none opened a definition. I uninstalled it.

It was too bland, and some words didn't exist

Not me first trying to test this on a page opened before I installed the extension, reading that I have to reload the page, and then testing it on the chrome web store, then reading it doesn't work there xD Anyways great extension, this will come in super handy for school this year.

Mine stalls with "searching" in the bullet. Cant find a fix-it solution.

I actually like it, very minimalist and simple. It works for me but seems to not work for others, but other than that nice extension!

works good now, but seems to be outdated.. which was disappointing- went to test the damn thing with the *latest word I could think of thats been around since 2020...* ... lets just say it did not pass the vibe check man.

it no longer works, it remains stuck on "searching" I have tried disabling/re-enabling the extension and uninstalling/reinstalling it to no effect.

The voice pronunciation has a bug, it doesn't complete the word it says.

it works fine but, when i go to see my words, first of all it opens in exel and it looks so messy, its stupendously hard to understand. And all the words have en or enen in front of it. its sp hard to understand what the actual word is , please make the viewing of our words more efficient.

Still working : confirmed. But this will need an update before 2023, because manifest version 2 will no longer supported after 2022.

it would be a lot better if we could "bookmark" definitions or rather save them for viewing later. this tiny addition could help a lot of students. i know i would personally love it if this feature was available.

Simple. Light. Convenient. Customisation. Perfectly integrated with Brave browser. Convenience at your click with Customisation that suits you. Instead of double clicking/selecting a word and then doing 'search for'... which opens a new tab; both time and resource consuming. Google Dictionary can now just show the meaning when you double click a word, you can also set a trigger key if pop up windows for every word double-clicked is kind of annoying for you. I am pretty content with this extension. Thank you, mighty Google! :)

Excellent plug in. When my kids are browsing the net, when they need the meaning of any word, they used to highlight it, right click, search web to get the meaning. Now, with this extension, its just high light, immediately we are getting its meaning(really helping to read the online content with less friction when unknown words falls across). Even I download our words history from this plug in. Excellent plug in. Thanks Google. I am looking for a additional feature of "Add this word to my dictionary" where, I can build my own word bank to download/read it online on my Google account. Now I am writing the word and definition on a note pad. If I had this word bank built into my Google account/local text file, I can continue to build our own, local word bank.

Works flawlessly between languages, which is why i havent moved to any alternative, since it does mess up a few words due to a smaller DB than before (people say it used to do wikipedia, but it doesn't anymore) also they have a catergory on the webstore for applications by google, but yet this one is one that isn't marked by google. curious.

This is the most foolish extension I have ever used. I litrally need to type the word and then get the results. What's the use when u need to do all the donkey work? It's like searching on the web itself! The extension is simply futile

After adding the extension to my browser(Chrome), it hasn't provided me a single definition for a word I double click. I don't know the problem but the extension does not work.

I don't know what I would do without this extension. Also translates foreign words, which is nice as a language learner as well.

I have been using this extension for years, generally, no problem. However, it would be a huge plus if a search entry — especially a word which one doesn't know the exact spelling to — would return an auto-correct or "did you mean" suggestion. For instance, I heard the word "accolade", I don't know how it is spelt exactly, and if I enter "acolaid" or "acolade", it would return "No definition found". Instead, it would be nice if it were to return, "did you mean, accolade?" and show the term. Yes, one can click on "search the web for "<misspelt word>", but that's an extra step and doesn't necessarily help one find the right word. Thank you.

Nice tool! I wish it would tell me how a greek letter is pronounced after I select it instead of just translating it into english.

Well, it's been unusable since (at least) April. Just gives a "Searching..." text instead of doing anything. If it works for you, awesome. It's a great idea and extremely useful when it works. I miss it a lot. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like this will be fixed for people like me any time soon, even though I'm running a typical, current Windows 10 64-bit OS, and my extension (and Chrome) are up to date as well. Edit: 4 years later... still broken. Bravo, Google.

This extension is Okay. But it doesn't define ALL the words. This is pretty useful.

Just totally broken. Words are never defined anymore, the pop up is inconsistent. I am think of leaving Chrome altogether.

SO USEFUL. it makes digesting wordy fics/articles/assignments so much easier, and as someone who loves pretentious poetry, i use the extension constantly LMAOOO.... 10/10 highly recommend <3

It does not provide definitions for half the words I lookup. I'm going to try out different extensions.

The extension is very helpful, however I would like to suggest that you would add a feature that would allow us to save some definitions in a folder or note. Nonetheless, great extension.

Lots of phrases are not found. Take a gander at "Instant Dictionary by GoodWordGuide" which seems to be better. I run both and the popups are on top of each other which I like. I will probably get rid of one unless each has its betterments.

NOT WORKING Every word I click on does not show a definition, but tries to translate every word from spanish, all are english words. EDIT: 4 months later the idiotic bug keeps on going, it interprets words such as "waning" as spanish words and tries to translate it instead of defining it, which obviously doesn't work. This is abandonware. too bad because it was a good one when it worked. EDIT 2: reinstalled the app fixed the issue and my rating

hardly every comes up with a definition for even the most basic words... basically it's just cruft now, a great idea and could be very useful but sadly just doesn't have the knowledge base to function properly.

Is there a way to view the dictionary history in web based page instead of downloading it and reading it. If you can add that capability it helps in reviewing the words history regularly and helps in learing that word. Please add that capability.

If it worked on PDF, I would love it even more.

This is absolutely amazing!! It is really helpful and works like a charm, there are a few glitches here and there, but it doesn't happen often. As an online book reader and a student, this extension really helped me. It is extremely useful and would definitely recommend for students!!

Almost perfect; there should just be a "detect language" option, as I speak 3 different languages. I hope you can change that soon!

Don't know what's missing or the developer forgot the source code file or whether it got corrupted. Don't tell that google is shutting this one also. Most useful, broken extension for almost 6 months!!

DOESNT WORK. IF YOU CHOOSE A WORD, IT OPENS A BLANK POPUP BUT NO WORD, NO MEANING. IT HAS BEEN SAME FOR OVER 6 MONTHS. WHAT KIND OF PAYCHECK DOES GOOGLE GIVE TO SUCH DEVS? USELESS ADDON. REPORTED.

Can't download word history, the formatting is so jumbled and all over the place in the csv file it's impossible to read

When I tick "Display pop-up when I select a word or phrase" option, I'll have some trouble at playing pronunciation of the words (the sound will cut at the beginning). I only give 4 stars to read this issue and fix the bug, although it's 5 stars for me. I love it, OALD is great.

this extension is great but it lacks definitions. please update it to where it has more definitions and maybe get synonyms and antonyms as well. i love this extension though it's perfect, fast and easy to use.

I wish there was a feature that i can download my history or can sync my chrome extension with my mobile. So whenever i need it the most i could use it.

Really like this. Something that would be nice to have is, whenever a search for a word on the extension is a miss(misstyped), it would have been helpfull if words have been suggested which are close by.

It isn't working for the past 1 day.... I click my word and the yellow box that pops up says "Searching" forever. My Chrome browser and computer are fully updated, and so are my extensions. Please fix this and I'll give back 5 stars because I rely on this extension daily. 8/24/2021

It's definitely very useful but does not provide the multiple definitions to one word. Please allow this extension to show definitions (of words in English) directly from Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.

It works most of the time. But on some pages it fails to see the highlighted word Also it keeps getting corrupted all the time on Chromebook and needs "repair" get working again. And again. Two years later it was OK on Chromebook but getting corrupted on Windows 10 Chrome. Did Google move the programmers around....

Update: Jun 7, 2021: Still like this extension; one thing that bugs me though is that, either randomly or after an update, it "forgets" the trigger key function and has to be manually changed back. Would be nice to have this fixed. I really like this extension, as it is MUCH easier to just select a word to see its description than it is to Google it. It's not perfect and sometimes grabs the wrong word or only one version of a word, but it gets the job done. It would be nice to include support for words you select in a textarea and not just text that's already on the page.

Meant to give 5 star, but 1 start deducted because the audio player not working on the hover-word's pop-up bubble, it stopped once it started to play the word.

It was not working well back then when I searched a word and it took a very long time to load. Removed and installed it back and forth a few times until one day it disappeared from the store. I came back now today, installed it and here I am, finally the extension working very well.

Could you add auto-pronunciation while capturing word on screen, please? Thank u:)

Dunno why it was taken down from the Chrome store, but it's not back up and I can use it again and couldn't be happier! Love being able to quickly highlight a word and instantly get the definition of it without having to leave the current website. Super useful to me, thank you Google. PS - Please don't ever send this extension to the Google Graveyard, thank you.

EDIT: After an update by the devs, the extension is working again! Very happy with it! I use this extension probably every single day. Love the quick and clear definitions AND the audio option so I know how to pronounce the word. Old Review: Hasn't worked for the last couple of days. I love this extension and use it multiple times a day, and normally I would give it 5 stars! Please fix it!

I loved this extension, it was really helpful while i was reading but now it doesn't work. When i double click a word its stuck on "searching". - 18/03/21 It started working again. ;) - 25/03/21

EDIT: 25.03.2021 It now works properly as of 25th march I have rated it 5 stars because it is a great extension. Leaving the previous review up for transparency It used to work perfectly and I would have given it 5 stars if it woked but as of around 18.05.2021 it has stopped working. Every time I search a word either by clicking on a word or directly typing into the extension search, it says 'Searching...' and the definition does not show up at all.

Amazing extension. Big thanks to the devs for fixing the problem with the recent update quickly.
