It was awful when I lost the Great Suspender when it was removed due to new owner adding malicious code. I cannot possibly thank this developer enough for bringing back a clean version of it. For us taboholics it is indispensable. It does worry me that it may go away again (https://gioxx.org/2022/10/18/the-marvellous-suspender-a-look-into-the-future/#en-us). Hopefully they will get some new developers to help do the necessary code migration.
I like the extension, it's really helpful. Recently seems the suspended tab can't be added into any Tab Group, is this a known issue? Do we have a plan to fix it. Thanks!
Works great, but it seems likely that this extension will break in the next year or two due to manifest v3 unless someone new is able to contribute :'( https://gioxx.org/2022/10/18/the-marvellous-suspender-a-look-into-the-future/#en-us
Duplicates a job that Chrome does better by itself. WARNING: When you remove it, wake up all tabs first if you want to keep them, because at that point it closes any suspended tabs without adding them to History, simply losing all your work. A major bug in my opinion.
Works great, no problem so far. Recently did a test on about 90 tabs opened, taking 7.5GB of my RAM. With the tabs suspended, Chrome only used 1GB of RAM. It's like, magic!
Indispensable! Absolutely love it. Please read this on the developer's website if you care to preserve this extension! https://gioxx.org/2022/10/18/the-marvellous-suspender-a-look-into-the-future/#en-us
looks pretty handy, but having a screenshot of the page is a must for me, and the option to enable it doesn't seem to work. just flicks back to "disabled".
Love it
Best
Super useful!
I had 975 chrome tabs open when I turned on the extension. I did performance tests after all 974 were "suspended" which all went fine but I wanted to compare those results with all 975 tabs "unsuspended" to see the difference in performance. Well, when I went to unsuspend all 975 using the unsuspend-all-keyboard-shortcut it....well, it sure "unsuspended" alright, and then continued unsuspending and continued and continued. That was about 40 minutes ago and it is still unsuspending, with my CPU usage at 95% and memory at near 100%. My system is lagging, to say the least.
I'm a software engineer and this is by far the worst chrome extension I ever installed, It didn't work as it was suppose to, but also when i removed it, all the tabs that were "suspended", WERE GONE. I LOST ALL THE TABS! BE CAREFUL DONT INSTALL THIS EXTENSION !.
Used to be one of my favorite extensions, now the tab doesn't even load or render and it's just a blinding white blank page. Edit: Working great again.
Been using this extension a long time and love it. It saves a ton of RAM when I have lots of tabs open. For the recent 'blank white page' issue, I found that clicking anywhere in the white space and waiting a few seconds brings back the expected look and behavior of a suspended tab. (Someone else found a different workaround by doing Chrome's "safety check", which may also work.) Edit: looks like the latest Chrome update fixed the 'blank white page' issue. Huzzah.
Works fantastically, and now I can stop keeping my own local copy of the unpacked extension. The ability to migrate your old extension "code" to the new one is great, really saved me a lot of hassle while fixing up my existing browser setup.
I went through the white blank page issue after the last chrome update, but I noticed that it's still working fine in my other chrome profile. After some digging I solved the issue: - Go to chrome settings => privacy and security => safety check. - After doing safety check it asked to relunch chrome to finish the update. And it worked fine after that, so I hope it can help you as well.
Great extension, but all extensions using the same mechanism for "suspending" tabs were broken by a recent Chrome update, unfortunately. As of right now, any suspended tab will display a blank white page instead of the inteded "suspended tab page" with the required code to "unsuspend" the tab. Not sure if this can be worked around or if Google made extensions like this not possible to maintain any more.
App currently doesn't function correctly - might be due to updates from Chrome 104
Since the last update, the extension is not working
To whoever is reading this and having problems with this extension since Chrome update, the developer is aware of it. The issue can be found on the extension's Github page along with a couple of fixes. For now, you can either "triple click inside the tab" to get it to come back, or you can use the following workaround to reload all tabs at once. Workaround after a browser start or window reopen: Session management -> Old TGS Extension id: put this extension id (noogafoofpebimajpfpamcfhoaifemoa) -> migrate tabs -> this seems to reload all tabs correctly
i rely on this so heavily, but has stopped working since the last chrome update. just a white screen with no option to suspend or unsuspend the tab. please fix it, i will pay money!!!
Barely works after recent chrome update
Ya, stopped working after recent chrome update.
Was nice but not effective since the last chrome update :/
The extension stopped working properly. now it's just a white page that can't be refreshed!
I was loving this extension and then all of a sudden it started to suck. It suspends now, yes, but getting it to un-suspend has become problematic. I'm looking for another solution as this one seems to be really buggy now.
Great extension I use all the time. It would be really cool to see an "unsuspend all tabs in this window" option tho, as I use multiple tabs to manage my browsing, and don't want to unsuspend ALL tabs at once.
Yes, the extension does what it's intended to do, but there are some things I didn't like. First of all, when a tab is suspended, the URL is replaced with something referring to the extension. So if you remove this extension while you have tabs suspended, forget about them, they're gone. Second, you can't just hit CTRL+R to reload suspended tabs. You either have to press that shortcut twice, or remember to use this extension's shortcut which is CTRL+SHIFT+S, which you'll never remember because it's similar to saving. Third and last, since tabs will be suspended, you'll end up having MORE tabs open, because you'll never need to close them, becoming an even worse mess.
amazing, replace the epic old one but that got bought by someone who tried to hack all of us, this is one of the first open sourced github not all heros have capes fork of it that i love and couldn't live without it.
Love it for real.
using bookmark folders for each business i work with has me loading 10 tabs at once per window. This extension limits the load that would otherwise create. Cannot live without it!
Quite literally one of the most powerful things you can do for your workflow. I am someone that always works with many tabs and windows open to organize projects and workflows. Without this delegation of usage my computer would actually hate me
The same as Eric and Ifer30. Recently the extension doesn't work well, with a totally white page instead of the normal suspended sleeping picture page. Have to manually edit url & hit enter to refresh.
Can't refresh 'suspended' tabs.
I never write reviews, much less for a chrome extension but this one really deserves. I never knew it would make such a big difference. If chrome seemed like a memory hungry monster before, it seems like a domesticated pet now. It makes a HUGE difference. wow!
One of the most useful extensions that you have out there. Suggestion: for the suspended pages, I suggest the developer to restore the old system of keeping displaying the website´s icon instead of the generic icon of the ´marvelous suspender´.
Recently having a problem where some tabs will have only the default favicon and will not reload, I have to modify the url manually.
Besides adblock this is the one chrome extension i could never live without, giving it 4 stars because there's a weird bug where sometimes tabs go white - if that bug was fixed then 5 stars
EZPZ
great extension (Especially after TGS was removed) but its a 4 star since theres a bug where the suspended tabs are white for some reason edit: 5 star now, since issue is fixable by running (chrome://restart) on a new tab
I prefer "Auto Tab Discard" and "Tab Suspender".
Really good, but any chance you could add an exception list (maybe domain name based or something?)
A transformative extension - my little Lenovo Duet went from chugging and straining to zipping along through dozens of tabs with barely a pause. Now for most usage it's faster than my Microsoft Surface Pro. Amazing!
This thing doesn't work as expected. It randomly starts suspended youtube videos OUT OF NOWHERE and I'm not seeing any option to fix that. IT'S TERRIBLE!
Loving it, works in a very simple and clean manner while suspending tabs which are not used.
Why won't it capture the page or part of the tab being suspended. I can't seem to enable that option. Any help?
I love tabs and I love the marvelous suspender For real though thanks for resurrecting this creator
Almost as good as the great suspender except Unable to prevent a tab from reloading when it gains focus and it doesn't exactly follow the stipulated time to suspense a tab
Love it. One of my daily used extension
I used The Great Suspender more than 5 yrs ago and shocked to know when the extension is tagged as malware in Nov 2020. Obviously I don't have much choice but re-open all 600+ tabs like crazy but Chrome doesn't allowed it so I had to recover it manually. I have been suspicious when installing extensions since then, wondering what kind of data they will collect, until the replacement declared safe to use. The only thing missing is "screen capture" feature for suspended tabs. I wish if Google has this feature by default so the users don't have to install extensions
Tabs aren't auto suspending after X amount of time. Also it closes a bunch of my tabs when I install it. At present it's a means to manually suspend tabs which is why I gave it as many stars as I did. If it was fixed and worked like TGS before the downfall it'd be 5 stars, easily.
Amazing! Can't live without it!
You're supposed to be able to not suspend a tab (the "Not now" option when you tap or click on the extension icon). But that hasn't worked for a long time, which is a pita, and it was one of the things I liked about it.
Worked great up till 2 days ago. Now suspended tabs can't be "woken" up. Refreshing does nada. Please fix whatever chrome did to break things. (I don't have Edge on this machine so it's not that in my case)
What happened? After a restart tabs are plain white and I have to manually get the suspended tab back from the address bar.
suspended tabs aren't loading properly, suspension pausing is not working
This has previously been great, but recently upon restarting my computer, the suspended tabs aren't loading properly - instead they're just completely white, and refreshing the page won't even load them as suspended. The only way to make them load is to manually copy and paste the URL into a new tab.
Glad this dupe is available. I also use Session Buddy for "deep storage" of project tabs but I need the hands off/automatic nature of TGS/TMS for keeping my projects open in multiple windows on multiple screens without having to open and close them. I generally have 70 tabs open and 40 of them are suspended (the partially finished work I had to drop to work on my current project), 15 are active use (what I ended up ignoring those other tabs for), and 15 pins (emails, calendars, todo lists, ticket systems, project management, etc). Thanks for providing this so I don't have to change my workflow too much yet!
Thank you for making TGS live!
Great extension, 100% similar with TGS. Easiest way to recover your deleted Great Suspender tabs is to install this extension then go to extension settings and on the new page go to Session management. Click "Migrate Tabs" option and wait for a few seconds. It will bring back/migrate the old tabs.
Anyone else start to get bugged out tabs with the latest Marvellous suspender update?
wish there was a way to make a shortcut key to manually select a tab to be forever unsuspended. e.g. Facebook where I am waiting for someone to chat and then it suddenly got suspended after an hour of inactivity.
Works exactly like The Great Suspender except this one isn't malware.
Recent update means tabs automatically unsuspend when they're viewed, no matter what setting you choose, would like this functionality back if possible.
Since the last update, after putting the tab to suspend and waking it up, it doesn't return to the place on the page I was, just opens the page like in new tab. Please fix this, very irritating when reading the long posts/forums.
Absolute moronic devs. They added a popup that you cannot turn off - it keeps popping up a new window, no matter what you are doing, telling you to update. I've never se something so ridiculous and audacious and i've used some really trashy extensions. absolute idiots. Use one of the other 37 forks of the previous open source suspender, or wait until those fascists at google support background tabs natively.
Please provide changelog for latest version. Otherwise, it is too dangerous to update.
Seems as good as The Great Suspender was but per the experts, without the additional code that the new owner/developer sneaked in that violates Google's terms and that could be used for nefarious purposes. Only problem I have with this new extension is the name. It would have been better if this new extension had a name more similar to the old extension as this would have made it easier to find. Perhaps "The Great Suspender, Malware-free edition" would have been a better name. Alternatively, Google could make this new extension easier to find when you search for The Great Suspender and similar extensions. It almost seems that Google for some reason doesn't like what this extension does. The only concern I have about such extensions is that they tends to encourage people to leave their browsers open for weeks at a time. The problem is that unless the browser is occasionally restarted, the browser doesn't get its updates installed and Chrome has recently has some 0-day exploits.
great replacement for the other suspender. I was able to fix all my old saved tabs by exporting bookmarks, and opening the html file in an editor, using find replace from "klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg" to "noogafoofpebimajpfpamcfhoaifemoa" then deleting all bookmarks and importing the fixed HTML bookmarks file.
Works as advertised. Suspended tabs look really cool with the dark theme on!
Same at The Great Suspender
I tried other tab unloaders after the TGS Apocalypse. There just is no comparison - this extension unloads so much more efficiently and the startup is so much cleaner. I'm so glad someone managed to rescue this from the malware abyss.
Happy to use again this wonderful extension wich is simple and so efficient. Thanks a lot, you rock guys ! :-)
This is the only "Great Suspender" replacement that mentions a privacy policy. So far it's really helpful.
I'm not sure when it was added but I love the screenshot functionality!!!!
Thanks X 1,000,000
Very Good and useful, especially if you constantly have a lot of tabs.
You picked us up when The Great Suspender let us down. Everything works the same. Thank you!
Great extension, I am glad it is back and no harmful reporting anymore
For those who had their tabs wiped out by the original extension being force-removed: Go to Chrome history and type : klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg You're welcome.
Such a simple but effective extension. Quietly sits in the background, pausing tabs you're not using. One click and the tab is live again. Has stopped my wife's laptop sounding like a diesel engine. Can't understand why chrome doesn't integrate it as standard.
for those who want to recover lost tabs I strongly recommend this extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/the-great-suspender-recov/ainlmpkfinfbbgdpimmldfdgpenmclmk
Appreciate getting the alternative out this quickly.
Re-release of The Great Suspender by the original author, before any issues and historically reliable/stable. Always loved it, and happy the dude brought back a viable version!
Thank you for this. Its only been couple of days but I've missing TGS. Then this came up. I enjoy it.
Thank you for releasing this.
Happy to have someone responsible take over the open source fork
Great alternative of the proper version of TGS before the analytics. Thank you sir.
Shoutout to The Verge comment section!! Had to go through the tedious task of bringing back over 60 tabs but I'm glad someone shared this alternative because I didn't know what I was going to do. Please don't fill this one with malware!
The Great Suspender was an important part of my work, thank you very much for doing this.
Works as expected !! This is Replacing my many years favorite add-in "The Great Suspender" after it has become malicious and unavailable. Thank you gioxx!
A great thanks for keeping the project alive. This is an extension I (we!) can't live without!
Thanks for moving TGS to TMS!!!
I have great taste, just downloaded The Great Suspender about 3 days ago, was thoroughly appreciating it, and all of a sudden, this malware trash happens. I don't even know if this one is safe, but hey, it works well.
A perfect replica of The Great Suspender. Sucks that it had to go but oh well. For those that are having trouble getting their tabs back here's what I did: 1. Go to the tab that is saying "klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg is blocked". 2. Search the URL for the "&uri=" part in the search bar. There's your URL from the original tab! 3. Copy and paste it into the same/another tab and there you go!
So glad you made this fork available, the old extension was a super important part of my workflow and I'm really happy to not have to change that!
Works like a charm! Thanks for keeping this project alive and malware free!
Thank you. Please continue to maintain this extension!
Best to save you RAM and productivity. cannot live without this anymore. Have 10 windows and 100s of tabs and all works fast as it should. Thank you!
Thank you SO much for this alternative! I'd been trying out different extensions and none were quite what I was looking for or needed compared to how I used TGS. You never realize how much you rely on something until it's gone.
Sweet, as someone who needs LOADS of tabs open to compare items, prices, etc. TGS was essential to my browsing, this pre-malware version recompiled is a great idea, thank you for doing it! --> awGuru.com
