If this worked the way it should, it would be perfect. The concept is exactly what I'm looking for. But webpages load weird with it open, and opening and closing it is such a pain why even bother.

Close, I have switched to edge because of vertical tabs, but I prefer the chrome browser. Now you are close, but for some reason when I click ctrl T for a new tab it opens another window up top as opposed to a new window on the side. If I am doing something wrong, let me know.

Good concept but not quick to appear. Also can not make groups.

simply does not work on the majority of websites.

The sidebar has a cool and kind of unique 'look and feel'. Some pages do not work with the extension. Because it doesn't work on all websites, it's pretty useless most of the time (in my case, with the websites I work with). Additional functionality (edit tab name would be awesome!) can also improve the useability. hope it will get better soon. great idea!

Doesn't work at all on Chromium on Linux Mint. And the keyboard shortcut clashes with the "Open File Manager" built-in default shortcut. Installed, tried to get it to work for ten minutes, uninstalled.

Works with a few tweaks, but it's buggy. If you pin the extension to your toolbar, you can use the button to show/hide. If it's getting stuck hidden, try the "fix" under Manage Extensions (as mentioned in another comment.) I found the best combo was pinned to the right (the button is closer), leave it hidden and click button to show/hide, "squeeze" option off, drag the size down to show more webpage. PROBLEMS: some pages like Youtube and Amazon wouldn't "squeeze" and the tabs covered the side bar. On other pages it didn't appear at all (New Tab page and Chrome Web Store) or tabs were occasionally greyed out and unusable (random sites, random times.) If you leave it unhidden and use the "squeeze" setting, every time a site starts to load, the tabs slide into view and move the page over. Very distracting. It also still randomly hides at times. Would be better if it lived in its own frame or pane and never disappeared. The tabs font size is tied to Chrome's zoom setting for each page, so it's inconsistent. Would be MUCH better if it stayed the same. When pinned to the left, a show/hide button on the left side would be helpful. Overall it's a good start, but the extension feels unfinished. Not sure if I'll keep using it.

Don't bother with it, it works once, when freshly installed and after you minimize it, you will never ever see it again. Waste of time.

This is the best vertical tabs extension I have found. If it doesn't work for you or once you hide it and it never comes back again just try this after installing it, go to "manage extension", then in "site access" change it to "on click" then "on all sites" again then refresh all websites and give it a try again.

Once you hide it, it's apparently hidden forever with no way to access it again. At all.

This is really disappointing. The auto-hide "feature" is more of a bug in that if you have multiple external monitors, recovering the hidden vertical tab window becomes near impossible. Moreover, the vertical tab isn't really resolving anything because the main tabs at the top of the browser are still present. I never thought I'd say this, but you all need to look into how Edge does it. I'm glad I discovered Vertical Tab extension so I know never to use it again.

When hidden, it can't be unhidden again. Also even when set to squash webpages, it still obscures on some pages, eg https://www.altium.com/viewer/

ZetaBang September 12th, 2022
ZetaBang

It was okay for a moment when I first started, but it did disappear once I either closed the page, even when I tried to reopen it, or when I went to a different tab. It didn't open back up after turning it on and off either. If it could stay open across all tabs like Edge, that'd solve a major issue.

Vihir Patel September 7th, 2022

Less that 60 seconds into it showing up on the left, it disappeaed for good. Could never get it to reappear, not even restarting chrome nor reinstalling the extension.

Stephen S August 24th, 2022

if it opened automatically when chrome started it would be great and if groups were somehow organised too along with grouping functionality. On second thoughts the animation of the page on each open is pretty off-putting. Still yet to find a tree style tab manager. Side-wise is the only one that has it all but it has its bugs too.

To the DEV, i am seeing all kind of comments, mostly GOOD but also complaining. as far as it goes for me , your extension is working perfectly in OPERA 89 August 12, 2022. i use about 30 tabs and your extension does not have any problems dealing with FULL SCREEN or AUTO HIDE etc......... Your extension is very nice because it gives the desirbale feature that was always present in FIREFOX since 15 years back............. "mouse enter/leave AUTO HIDE TAB BAR..." In 15 years NO OTHER BROWSER has done AUTO HIDE TAB BAR and that could be due to IP LAW. and FIREFOX owning the idea. Your extension gives AUTO HIDE to any browser upon Mouse ENTER // LEAVE activty. i can see that there are many similar extensions to yours but i wont ttry them until yours fails. many thans Vince. .....your extension solves that on any CHROME BASED browser

EGDE make this MUCH better with default functionallity.... But i want similar on Chrome, but no ones seems to get it right.....Does not reappears when hidden. I have tried everything suggested in this tread....

This extension could have very easily been the best vertical tabs option, if only the developer would continue to update it & solve bugs. Last update was in october of 2021. As a result it has some issues with overlapping on Youtube, and based on bug reports in the Github, some websites will flash rapidly (seizure warning) with this extension enabled.

Luca Benazzi June 5th, 2022

It has great potential, but the fact that it loads each single time that a new page opens, causing the page content to shrink, is in violation of HCI best practice. Highly distracting and impossible for me to see that animation take place every time a new page loads. It also doesn't load when a new tab is opened. I guess it's difficult for devs to solve this since they have no contro on windows management, but I would rather have it as a separate window, then. Visual design is good compared to other similar extentions, but I would like to have the option to control spacing between items and font size. I would like to see more tabs in the vertical stack, rather than having no control over that. I will have to uninstall, hoping it's going to be improved upon. Thanks for you efforts

Doesn't work correctly with GMail when Auto-Hide is Off. GMail interface is out of browser edge on the right side.

Pros: - The most streamlined extension for vertical tabs. - Basically similar to vertical tabs in Edge. - A few useful options. - When open, opening links in new tabs show up in the list smoothly. Cons: - Doesn't push many sites narrower when it's open. It just overlaps, so it can't reliably be left open. - Doesn't really "stay" open between tabs. Opens and shuts. - Doesn't show on some pages. - Auto hide doesn't seem to work.

John Partington April 27th, 2022

a bit hit and miss, on some websites it doesnt work at all and sometimes it will display but over the top of the page i.e. it doesnt always manage to push the page over. Would be better if it was a permanently displayed pane and not displayed after the webpage has been loaded (even if that means sometimes its empty). Version of Chrome: 101

Susan M Davis April 24th, 2022
Susan M Davis

Does not seem to work at all. It says on a PC use Ctrl-E to show the tabs. But on a PC in a browser Ctrl-E pulls up a search bar. So seems to be no way to activate this. Clicking the button in the web bar just takes you to the Chrome Web Store for this product. Maybe it only works on "some" Chromium browsers and doesn't work on all of them.

Jen Peterson March 29th, 2022

For the most part, I am very happy with vertical tabs. It does exactly what I wanted, lists my tabs vertically, auto hides, and reappears when I hover the cursor against the side. I do agree, however, that the extension could do with some more features. An actual preview of the tab with a picture would be nice when hovering over a tab.

Exactly what I needed! Thanks for the developers, though it's not perfect in many ways (Unusable in new tabs, hidden after jumping to new tabs), I believe you have tried all the APIs you can found to make vertical tabs availiable in Chrome. Good job.

Tadas Armonavičius January 18th, 2022
Tadas Armonavičius

It would be great if the extension wouldn't bug out all the time. 1. Ctrl + E doesn't work as Chrome is using it for "Search Google" and there are no options in the extension to change the shortcut or disable Google's default one. 2. If You try to open the side tab by left-clicking the extension when You're on the New Tab, not only does it not work (which is not a big deal and I understand why) but it won't work anymore once You close the New Tab or open one of your already opened tabs. Only relaunching Chrome fixes this. If these issues are fixed, I'd bump the review +1 star each. EDIT: I should've used it a little more before writing a review, the extension doesn't work on New Tab and Chrome Web Store. When I switch to other sites, it works perfectly fine. So +1 as promised. Still wish there were options for different shortcut.

Gabriele Trovato January 13th, 2022
Gabriele Trovato

Does not resize the browser layout, with the result that for websites like Gmail, some buttons on the right become unreachable. The result is that you have to disable and reenable the tabs all the time.

Khan Jones January 10th, 2022
Khan Jones

Doesn't work. Can't convince it to come out on any tab that wasn't the initial tab that popped up after I installed it. Yes I read the various shortcuts recommended. Maybe this is optimized for Apple

David Klement December 15th, 2021

The extension is useless in browsers that support tab groups (e.g Brave). If you want tab groups AND vertival tabs, use Edge (it's awesome, it just doesn't have that level of protection on Android as Brave has).

Works reasonably well, I tried to hide the original tabs at the top of the browser (since they are no longer needed), but that option doesn't seem available.

I've been looking for a vertical tab extension for a while- finally found one... its just very minimal and it seems like it never gets any updates. I was hoping to like it, but I'll probably be uninstalling it. As theirs no option to make the font larger or anything such as zooming the text... so I cant see it. Making it useless for me.

Melanie Sage December 2nd, 2021
Melanie Sage

I just needed something to list out the text for all of my tabs. This will make it a lot easier to see which (if any) particular one of the 300 tabs I have open has any relevance to what I'm doing. For this simple use case it looks like it works perfectly. Here's to hoping I close those other tabs... Thank you!

Zi Jie Lim December 1st, 2021
Zi Jie Lim

not really working well but great try.. i wish it can minimize like edge to the side and extend to the right if cursor is around at the tabs.. i like the idea of having hotkeys to "call" the vertical tabs but still having both hotkeys and mouse would be better..

Pio Soesetio November 24th, 2021
Pio Soesetio

Sometimes works, sometimes it just doesn't want to appear. With many tabs open, it takes a while for the vertical tabs UI to load. EATS UP CRAZY AMOUNT OF RAM. With around 20 tabs opened, the google chrome task manager shows that this extension itself uses 6 GB of RAM. Doesn't makes sense. Definitely not worth eating up my RAM only for vertical tabs.

David Campbell November 23rd, 2021
David Campbell

I like the look of it. However: 1. Tab panel does not appear on all tab pages. 2. The squeeze feature does not work on youtube 3. Need more styling options. For me point 1 is the most important, get that fixed and I can start using this extension. 2 would be nice, just make sure that the squeeze feature will work for every web page visited. 3 is a nice to have and would put icing on the cake.

Anna Lippert November 18th, 2021
Anna Lippert

I just disabled this application mainly because the pop-up window could not be repositioned ― forcing to refresh the page in order to remove it. Soon becoming an annoyance. I would add, subsidiarily, that the main usefulness of this application would be to free up the horizontal space of the tabs. Aside from that, the application seems personally to have run smoothly. Which is why, in hopes of improvement, I just deactivated it versus uninstalling it.

Josh Wilson November 15th, 2021

pretty handy, would be 5 stars if it could also do bookmarks and if it could arrange tabs by domain

Zar Bin Tar October 20th, 2021
Zar Bin Tar

I have been using for about a year, its ok, not perfect. You cant drag and drop or modify the tabs at all really. The latest update ruined even that much. So now I have a vertical side tab extension that puts the tabs none vertical just like the horizontal way chrome shows them above to begin with. junk now

Anita Feng September 17th, 2021
Anita Feng

Nothing like the Microsoft Edge vertical tabs. It's really quite useless. It should hide the horizontal tabs and show on new tabs, which it doesn't. This just means my screen space ends up getting hogged up by both vertical AND horizontal tabs and who wants that?

Nice try, but really unusable. Microsoft Edge has a nice, native vertical tab feature that works well. Sadly this Chrome version works poorly. Keyboard shortcut is incorrect. Tabs on left cover portion of the webpage, if the tabs even show up. Too inconsistent to rely on.

Great extension!! Unfortunately my use case is to use with Confluence and Jira. It works only one on tab (for whatever reason) for Confluence and not for Jira... But perhaps I can open a dummy tab to see the tabs vertically. Are you going to be able to support Tab Groups? Would be great then if the tab order matches the new tab order by grouping and see the groups themselves in the vertical list. Will be much more useful in finding the tab I'm looking for...

Like most have been saying for a while now, this (VERTICAL TABS) extension has great potential, but sadly does not work properly, too many bugs. **None of the options below worked as well for me using the latest Chrome. > Toggle the sidebar using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + ` or Ctrl + Esc or Cmd + Esc or Opt + Esc or Alt + Esc > Using keyboard shortcuts are recommended once you formed the corresponding muscle memory.

SOLUTION TO CTRL + E NOT WORKING - chrome://extensions/shortcuts - Change the shortcut for the extension and everything is well. I wouldn't say this is the best Vertical Tab layout, it could be much slimmer and takes up quite a lot more space, but from all the other options on Extensions, this is the BEST VERTICAL TAB Extension available as of today 08/16/20. NOTE TO DEVELOPER, the default Shortcut set to CTRL + E does not work as it Chrome is using it for Google Search, so Chrome responds to it, your extension does not.

UI is neat and useful. It doesn't work with some web sites because it sits in the same DOM as the web page, and it is Google's fault for not having the side bar API that firefox has!! To me, this is a promising prototype; but not until Google finally release the side bar API, vertical tab bar will never work properly.

Diane Soffar April 13th, 2020
Diane Soffar

I would love this extension if it worked properly. Most of the time it doesn't show up. The toggle Ctrl E doesn't toggle--it just brings up a Google search. I like the layout but I need it to always be there.I have way too many tabs open to show at the top of the page. So if the vertical tabs are not there, I have no way to find the tab I am in to change to another tab.

Alireza Mirzanejad April 3rd, 2020

Needs an option to change the shortcut. Ctrl+E is the shortcut for search on Edge so basically you can't use the extension on Edge.

Alan Hughes March 30th, 2020

Just doesn't make any sense. You still have to show the tabs bar at the top so you can press the button for this extension to show the vertical/sidebar tabs list, which defeats the whole point...

Not very helpful so far. Still need many improvements. Does not work on new tab page. Takes too much space while staying open (Need a slimmer mode in which tabs are always visible, and switchable, and can be expended by mouse hover). Good to have tab thumbnails in the tab list. Hope it can be better. This is promising and demanding.

This extension has a bunch of fundamental problems 1) Does not work with Gmail. Part of the gmail page renders *behind* the tab list. 2) The tab list renders differently in each tab, which crates a jarring experience where tabs can be located in different spots for each tab. For example, if you zoom in on one tab, the tab list gets bigger too. The tab list should not be rendered as part of the page, it should be outside the render window for the page.

Almost what I was looking for. For even better (in my case): - color like current chrome theme; - hover to open from left or right side or/and customizable shortcuts; - somehow hide standart horizontal tabs in window mode; - barely noticeable indication for pinned tabs and pin/unpin from this sidebar;
