I use to really, really love this app. It worked like a charm even on major streaming outlets like paramount plus. However, I recently got a new computer with windows 11 and now it doesn't work at all.
Yo! It actually worked! Now I can't see cusses.
It's great you can block out slurs and swear words. You can block out specific emojis too
This extension is great for video but I wish it would work with srt files.
This is a tremendous tool, especially to stream movies on platforms not supported by VidAngel or the TVGuardian. APF works on YouTube, Disney+, Amazon Prime/Freevee, HBOmax, and all other major streamers, and I'm able to hook my laptop up to my TV with a HDMI to stream filtered content on a large screen. It's completely customizable by letting you add words to the blacklist, decide on your own substitutions, or whitelist other words, and you can even have several word lists to run filters through for different audiences. The developers keep everything running smoothly and update users when there's an error via GitHub or Discord, then provide temporary patches while they work on a permanent fix. The only drawback to using APF over something like VidAngel is that the filters aren't manually timed to the particular movie and relies entirely on reading closed captions, so there's some window for error if your closed captions aren't synced perfectly to the dialogue. It will also mute the entire line of captioning instead of just muting the offensive word because it's not actually *listening* for the word, but reading it with the entire line. So if you're using APF to watch The Breakfast Club, you may be watching in silence for full scenes. Haha. It also won't filter baked-in captions—like if someone swears in another language and the translation appears at the bottom of the screen in the movie itself, because closed captioning isn't generated for that. Overall this is a game-changer. I tested it on DC's Titans and it worked beautifully. I had no idea how much anxiety had been building in me while watching without a filter. I was so focused on my thumb hovering over the mute button that I was missing whole scenes and plots and not enjoying the show like I should have been. When I used AFP, the experience was a night and day difference.
i finally found out how to work it but i am still tring to censor my videos oon google photos
I cant figure out what to do with this! it has so many settings without explaining what to do! I couldn't find a tutorial or anything that helped. I found things that explained what they do but it doesn't connect the dots on how to do it. Its like I have to hire a programmer to figure it out! tooooooo complicated!!!!!!!
I absolutely love it. I have used it for months and I can't go without it. I always wanted to find something like this and was so pleased when I discovered that this did every single thing I ever asked for. You can even tell it to censor text and audio that isn't included in the wordbanks like saying the Lords name in vain by typing them into the words section of the settings.
Fantastic! However, as of late, the extension does not work on any site other than YouTube. Trying to switch the extension on is impossible on these sites; it changes my cursor to a 'no sign'. Never had this problem before.
Absolutely phenomenal. Ever since I started using this, my stress levels over people's stupidity have decreased significantly. No more wasting time on explaining the science of biology, cognition, ethology or the values of non-human animals to people who won't even listen to science. I am online all day long and interact with a ton of articles as well as random people, which unfortunately exposes me people who are willfully ignorant and extremely unethical. I'm not even going to mention the times I devolved into writing entire essays for people who don't give a flying F. I adore the malleability of this add-on. It's simple to use once you figure out what you need to do and it's extremely effective at censoring the words. I assume it goes through the entire code of the website and blocks out the words even if they're not immediately visible, yes? Brilliant. Keep it up, OP.
been loving this extension but suddenly is not working, tried everything, no joy :(
Absolutely love this extension for watching my movies/tv shows on Netflix, DisneyPlus, Prime and so much more! Kudos to the developers and the support team who address inquiries quickly and resolve any bugs. Keep up the excellent work!
Richard was so supportive, knowledgeable, and quick to reply to my email. He went above and beyond to help me. He took time out of his own day to troubleshoot the extension for me and kept in constant communication. He didn't stop helping until I was satisfied. Thank you Richard for helping me and creating an extension where people could watch movies without profanity. Kelly
The filter does a GREAT job removing offensive language. In our culture, profanity is becoming much too acceptable and the ability to watch prime and other streaming services without constantly being offended is greatly appreciated. Using God's name in vain, the F word and other exclamations are totally unnecessary and unfortunately highlights the limited, stunted vocabulary that is common now a days.
Love this. Also love that Richard is active and supports it. Makes streaming so much more enjoyable
Tested the audio feature on Disney+, works well!
WORKS ON LITERALLY EVERYTHING!!! This is the best product for filtering! Outs VidAngel and ClearPlay to shame! The audio muting is phenomenal!
This is the most useful extension I've used to date. It filters text profanities on websites and also mutes profanities on streaming videos. This enables me to watch movies and series without being forced to listen to people swearing. I found a streaming site (Amazon Prime Video) where it did not work and the Developer was extremely helpful with resolving it. A huge thank you to Richard Frost for the assistance and support provided and for providing this extremely valuable extension.
Amazing Extension. You have to click on mute audio checkbox under the audio tab for it to begin working on youtube. Extension works great. Thanks to the developer.
Been waiting on someone to make something like this extension for years. I watched many of my favorite movies growing up edited for tv and was disappointed when I bought the movie and realized it had so much bad language. So glad I stumbled upon this extension. I didn't know something like this existed. Now I can really enjoy my movies. Keep up the great work.
Works great most of the time, but in YouTube captions if a custom added word is all in upper case the plugin doesn't filter it or mute the audio. Also I can't seem to get it to allow certain swear words; the S-word and F-word seem to always be filtered no matter what. :( Other than that, a great plugin!
Perfect! I just love this developer. When I asked Richard to add showmax audio support it was done in a matter of a few hours. He really made my day. Please support him in any way you can. Thank you Richard :)
I added Netflix to the list of sites where the muting requiring the subtitles to be shown failed. I added Netflix to the sites that should be filtered. I think Netflix updated or I was missing something.
Set up can be a bit confusing at first but once you configure everything how you want, it works really well! So many shows on netflix with bad language I can now watch. Thankyou to whoever made this!
10/20 This is more than a Profanity Filter if you let it be! OH.. I needed this LONG ago! You can use it to replace words for filtered summarizations and filtered copy/paste. For instance, I go on a blog where the writer puts anything posted with a name like his, amongst various other odd things he censors, on hold. And a lot of times I unwittingly copy something with the name Michael, or the word author, or links etc in it and it gets put on hold.. This can filter that copied info automatically. Thank You!!
This extension was just what we needed. It is THE BEST for Chrome compared to others of its kind. Developer please note: It seems to be having issue muting audio in HBO Max lately. It does continue to censor subtitles flawlessly.
I can't get this working. I mean, it edits the subtitles but doesn't mute the bad language on Netflix.
Excellent extension. Well-made, kept up-to-date. This is probably my favorite browser extension I have ever used. The author is responsive if bugs arise. It is so extremely customizable, too.
Works unbelievably well! Even work on tweets
Very helpful for my anxiety triggers for certain words
It's pretty great extension! Thank you for creating this! One problem I've been having recently is that YouTube takes forever to load when I have this extension enabled. Do you know what I can do to fix that?
fantastic
I absolutely hate cursing. IT ALWAYS GETS STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR A WEEK! This extension filters out curse words all over the web. Now I don't have to worry about them getting stuck in my head. Thanks!
My kids wanted to watch Hamilton and I wanted them to, but the profanity was too much! Now, we can watch it as a family. Thank you sooooo much!!!!
Finally, something that works on Amazon Prime. I used to use Stream Clean, but for whatever reason it can't keep up with Marvel movies. Nice to find an equivalent that actually does the job.
This extension is good at filtering bad words from all of my favorite websites, like itch.io game store, where i bought only 2 games at the time. Now there are bad words in Comments sections, including YouTube's comment section, and other websites where they write bad words. I haven't tested it \on YouTube's Subtitles or Video, where they say bad words on YouTube's Video, and on subtitles. The only problem I think it has, it that it doesn't filter out bad words from the pictures, like foul-mothed Comic strips, or some other pictures. The Extension has to be more advanced to filter in PIctures or Videos, like skipping a part of the Video where the Video's Publisher included Subtitles that are built inside the Video, and not on the YouTube's Subtitles. Maybe, if this extension can't help us filtering words in Pictures, maybe it should contain an option to disable those pictures with bad words while other pictures that doesn't contain bad words should be there. It should also filter out bad images that does/doesn't contains bad words. I can't name the pictures I'm talking about here right now, but it should be updated to remove bad pictures, and skip parts of the Video where there is an bad word containing clips. It should also check some websites and disable adult websites. This Extension have good branding name, but it should be updated, like skipping video clips containing bad words, removing images that contain bad words, etc. This extension surely makes Internet a better place to explore.
I like this Profanity filter a lot, but unfortunately it only works on Netflix..I've tried using this on YouTube,Disney, Paramount, and so much more and it doesn't work. Which is so frustrating because I want to watch movies with my Mom and siblings. Please help and fix this issue.
I am in LOVE with this extension. It's crazy how hard it is to find something with this function. Not only do I feel way more comfortable browsing now, I can substitute with words and phrases that give me a good laugh! I will download and support this on every browser and device I ever own. The only thing I haven't had luck with is the audio censoring. When I use it on Netflix, I can either have the audio censored, or have subtitles on; not both. On youtube it just wasn't working for me at all, but I see there was an update recently so hopefully that's coming! Thank you Frost for all your hard work!
NICE
Thank you brainiacs for developing this for the layman!!! What a difference it has been watching shows. Albeit, there are instances where the text falls behind the audio and the whole process becomes nullified. I would suggest pre-filling the words with a list. I had to seek out my own list, which was inconvenient.
Thank you so much for making this! It's a lifesaver. However, I'm still getting curse words on sites like Pinterest where it's part of an image. I imagine it's much harder technologically to filter those, but is there a setting that lets you do that?
I would give it 6 stars if I could. It is so useful and effective! The settings interface was tricky at first, but it works like a charm once it is set up to your liking.
Hi Richard, great filter. Works really well on Netflix and on Youtube which is what I primarily use. Just wanted to see if you could help apply the filter to other streaming sites such as https://123movies.mom/ and https://gomovies-online.me/ - would really appreciate it, thank you. [Extra, thanks for helping with the queries I had Richard]
Noice. Now I can go around searching things on Google while streaming on Twitch, worry-free. (mostly.) Two suggestions: -Censor words that have already been inadequately censored such as "bum" with an @, "frick" with two or three asterisks, "dung" with an exclamation mark/two miscellaneous symbols, etc. You can probably do that with regex or manually adding permutations or something but I have other coding to do. -Custom CSS for censored words would be nice. Not even gonna ask for things like homoglyph detectors, acronym detectors, substitutable glyph lists, context AI, whitelist malice or anything of the sort until people read this review and decide to get way too smart with their swearing endeavours.
works
I recently found this extension, and I really enjoy it! I've been using it especially for muting profanity in online videos. Very clever and helpful! Richard was very responsive and helpful when I was trying to add a new streaming site. Five stars.
I love the extension so much that I wanted to rate it a 5 star review! It blocks out bad words on the screen! You can replace bad words to whatever you want! On this computer, I made bad words replace to "Censored"! You can add or delete bad words on it! The word "blocked" gets filtered out for no reason! I deleted the word "blocked" to be unfiltered because the word blocked is not a bad word! I really love it because children and your family won't see it and repeat it! Richard Frost, how did you come with this Chrome Extension? I really want to know! Thank you!
Best profanity filter I've ever used. The only issues I found is it sometimes fails to recognize profane words, (thats youtube's automatic captions fault), and it adds a good 8 seconds to loading to every page. I'm very patient, so it doesn't bother me, but I can see it bothering other ppl. Eitherway, get this extension. Its great. I can watch Gordon Ramsey on youtube without the profanity.
Such a great extension!!!
it works great.....sometimes. I watch a lot of Disney+, and for the most part it works. But every now, and then it just misses a few. Besides that it is a GREAT profanity filter, and unless there's a better one out there, ill keep using this one.
This is a great extension. Since I have a family that are NOT allowed to be using profanity, I knew I'd need this one day. However, I do have one request for you. The filter didn't complete block out bad language, as I've noticed that it isn't blocking bad language in images as well. I think it would be great if you'd also filter images as well, especially ones that contain profanity. Overall, I do enjoy this. Keep it up! :)
We love this extension. Our kids like a youtuber who says "Oh my G*d" a million times per video, and we are not ok with that intensity of blasphemy. Using youtube auto-generated subtitles we get word-accurate muting, leaving us with an audible "oh my" which almost sounds natural. It is not 100%, (really the fault is probably youtube's subtitles) but the blasphemy level drops by 95% and our kids know we care.
Can it filter words in real time? For example while the text changes in a search bar, it would filter the word
This extension...I don't know what to say about it. It's simply phenomenal! I can censor or replace any word I want, and the timing is actually PERFECT! Unlike other mediocre filters. Of all my extensions, this is the only one I actively use and the only one I was so influenced by as to write a review! Richard and the team, you all have really outdone yourselves, not to mention the fact that you guys actually listen to feedback, which is something that is VERY hard to come by among developers. The only complaint I have is that the audio filter does not seem to work on Amazon Prime Video, but the text filter works fine. Other than that, your amazing extension is definitely something worthy of praise
This extension works fine on YouTube. I added the extension to my Chrome browser and I accepted most of the defaults, except that I chose asterisks to replace profanity, rather than the default replacement characters. This extension allowed me to watch with our seventeen-year old son a movie that I had purchased through YouTube, the Big Short, which is very educational on finance and economics and which I thought would be helpful for our son, who intends to study economics in college. But that movie, as I had learned through watching some excerpts on YouTube, has a lot of profanity. After I purchased the full movie and previewed it a bit, my son and I hooked up my computer to our large-screen TV via an HDMI cable and we then watched the movie together. In the movie are a couple of very brief flashes of female nudity which I had seen as I previewed parts of it, so when those scenes began I jumped up in front of the screen to block the screen. But for one scene I sat down too soon and my son and I shared a chuckle at my mistake. We cannot protect our kids from everything. For this profanity filter to work subtitles must be turned on. When a sentence containing a profanity is shown the profane word is replaced with asterisks, but the rest of the sentence can be read on the screen. The audio is silenced not only for the profane word but for the entire time that the sentence is displayed on the screen. Therefore innocent words are also silenced, which is annoying, but which is tolerable, since the innocent words can be read in the subtitles. Perhaps I can find an adjustment in the extension's audio settings to allow me to limit the audio silencing to only the profane words. Of course a viewer can often guess which profane words were used by watching the lips of the actors. But that is still far less offensive than hearing those words. Before downloading this filter I had watched a scene or two of the movie in which were spoken many profanities and when I went to bed a short time later that foul language was still running through my brain. It is better to keep that language out of our brains as much as possible. The filter works great. Nonetheless, I learned that I will need to make use of the feature which allows some innocent words to be displayed even when a syllable would be an offensive word if standing alone. I sometimes watch videos about Japan and World War II and I also read Internet articles on that topic. After I installed this filter I was puzzled to see in one article a portion of one general's name replaced by asterisks. I had thought that the article was discussing General Yamamoto and I was surprised to see him referred to as "General Yama****a." But when I turned off the extension and again looked at the article I saw the full name, which is that of a different general. Speakers of Japanese can perhaps guess what was the offending four-letter English word in that Japanese general's name. This extension is a free download, but I later sent in a small donation to the creator, Mr. Frost, and he responded with a thank-you message via e-mail. He suggested that I write a review, which I am more than happy to have now done, since Mr. Frost is providing a very useful service to Internet viewers with his profanity filter.
Partially useful, but constantly have to reset it - don't know why.
This is the best extension! I had been looking for something to stop all the cuss words in my browser and then I found this extension. 'Many' thanks to the developer for this extension. Keep up the good work!
I can't even begin to express my excitement to have this working in Plex. I love that I can mute swear words out of movies and my kids won't have to hear them.
Had trouble at first to get all the settings right but Richard was very helpful! Thx for a great filter Richard God bless! Andries
I installed this app to replace coronavirus with "flu" .. reading the news is now a magical experience Thank you Richard
This has been great. I'm not the one that enjoys curse words. I've been having fun with the customization list. I'm a fan of the Cosmere universe (A la Brandon Sanderson) have subbed some not so good language with Cosmere curses. It's [storm]ing good fun ;)
Doesn't seem to work on amazon video.
It's a good extension to use, probably the best one out there! The only problem is that it deactivates after a while and I had to reinstall it.
I tried every setting but it mutes out the entire sentence instead of just the word. is there any way to fix this?
This is the most powerful profanity I have found. While it works great out of the box, you can customize it to do anything you want and even transfer your settings easily between browsers. It's hard to imagine how it could do a better job.
Works okay, however: 1) You cannot have the extension "whitelist only". That is, you can't have the default be disabled, and only enable it on specific sites (such as only on the websites you'd help your kids visit). 2) The audio mute function is based only on currently-visible subtitle text. If the subtitles are even a little delayed from the actual speech (it often is), then you'll hear the start of the word before it's muted. Also: 3) Audio mute only works if you have subtitles displayed. 4) I tried adding a "custom mute selector" that uses the transcript panel on YouTube to mute words before they're reached. My attempt was: { "www.youtube.com": { "className": "ytd-transcript-body-renderer active", "mode": "element", "tagName": "DIV" } } But it doesn't work since the audio-mute's mutation observer only checks for *added* nodes (rather than nodes whose class is changed), so my selector isn't checked against the transcript lines when it needs to be (when they are activated, or the line after the active one). In the meantime, you could try this other extension which is able to mute words even before the subtitle text is reached: https://github.com/RobotCopy/Adieu-Profanity-Filters That alternative extension used to work well, however recently it seems to be unreliable due to changes in YouTube, meaning neither extension works that well atm. Oh well. (I'm a web developer so may build a new extension that works reliably on YouTube, without subtitles visible, but don't have the time atm.)
By far the best profanity content filter on the internet. Very user friendly and the latest update is a priceless value addition. Kudos for the good karma - your good karma will save you and your family! Amen
Your extension plays a big role in vastly improving the quality of my life. After some time, I can see a safe and positive Internet that I dream of. I love it and thank you very much.
This is gonna be SO HELPFUL!!!! THANK you SO MUCH for this wonderful extension!
I do like it, but when I'm watching a youtube video with the audio thing on with captions on, sometimes the captions completely skips the bad word and it is uncensored. Could you fix this? Also when it's user -made captions the audio mutes completely when there's a bad word.
Yo Dawg, I heard you like to read risky stuff at work. Best filter on the market
This is amazing it blocked the Word God on audio and I get pretty offended when people misuse my God`s name like that and now it blocks it when I am watching YouTube it blocks it
On Netflix, for audio, it bleeps out entire sentences instead of just the word. Disappointing.
I would not go online without this extension. If you search for anything online using Google or other search engines you will encounter profanity no matter how "harmless" the search result is however not a day goes by that this extension does not fail at filtering profanity and if it does I contact the developer and he fixes quickly. He also listens to all my feedback requests. The only place I encounter profanity is with images but now I also use an Image Blocker extension I enable on risky sites.
Simply amazing. I didn't even know extensions could reach this far. The flexible text blocking is awesome, but the new audio function is more than I could've imagined. This is going on every computer I'll ever own, period.
I love it .. works on youtube. Thanks
This extension is fabulous. I have repurposed it to remove the spam from YouTube comments.
Works great, except for the audio feature. Does it work on youtube?
It's a really amazing extension, and the best part about this extension is the customizability. You could literally censor any word you like and even add substitutions to them. One of the best extensions I've used.
This extension is amazing for filtering websites. It's customizable and blocks almost all profanity that I've found. The only part I didn't like was how it was preset to show the profanity in the popup, but I easily disabled that in Options. Thank you so much for creating this extension for Chrome!
I love the ability to substitute bad words for whatever words I want. This is a fantastic extension. It works, it is customizable, I'm a fan. (I might suggest a little more ease on the substitution bits, that was hard to figure out.)
I love this extension so much. I love being able to scroll on social media and have words bleeped out. One thing I really enjoyed was being able to take out swear words completely and print out the document swear-free. It was a clean read. I would recommend this extension to a friend - and I've done it, several times. I am so glad this extension exists! It leaves me with a piece of mind!
What the [freak] This is great haha! I feel better when I browse and read articles. Very helpful tool!
This is amazing. Now I can scroll through youtube and instagram comments without shredding my conscience to bits. THANK YOU!
Super good, works fast and effectively. Developer is open to feedback and actively keeps the app updated. I highly recommend this extension for everyone.
Works good
An excellent extension overall. I like the new option to completely remove bad words instead of just censoring them. However, I think that there is a bug: I want to delete a word from the preset list of words to filter. I've tried doing this by selecting that word from the drop-down menu and clicking the "Remove" button, but this does not work. Can you please fix this?
Phenomenal extension. This does one (seemly) simple task but does it to near perfection. As is, it does a great job of filtering out profanity; with user customization, it really opens up the functionality. I want to give a shout out to Richard. A while back I looked into this extension because it was close to what I was looking for. I made suggestions to Richard for things I was looking for that were lacking in the extension and he has implemented I think just about all of my suggestions. Now it might be that he was planning on doing those things anyhow, but the fact that he actively listens to suggestions and is always looking for ways to make improvements is very impressive and should be commended.
In 1.0, this extension went from great to amazing. It's so great! You can choose to exclude just the word specified or the word in other words specifically for each filter you create. You can choose to replace words with other words to make the sentence stay seamless. Literally, this is an amazing extension now. I use it on Chrome on my computer and on Firefox on mobile. The one thing that would make it better is if changing a setting didn't deselect the current filter. That would be fantastic. There's no lack of functionality, though. It works fine! Just a bit tedious :) Great work on 1.0!!!
Just what I needed! Thank you so much for this. You are #1
Good for installing on kids computers when they browse the internet
I only got this filter because I hate that every site I look at has something about Donald T****. I deleted out the normal list and just put Pres. T****'s name in. It works so great! Thank you!
This word filter is the most effective for forum and blog posts that I've used on Chrome browsers. It has yet to miss a bad word or modified word I've come across.
Everything seems good. But would you like to expand the function when we open HTML documents [i.e. saving a web page and opening it later offline]? (Where it doesn't seem to work right now)
Unfortunately it's a bit too simple. Instead of just text on a page, it will actually filter the HTML SOURCE! Twitter was messed up, until I realised it had changed the parts of the HTML source to read along the lines of '<p cl***="top-section">'! Also does not work with dynamically updating pages like chat clients. I'm sure it's great for those with super simple needs, but it's not for me.
It works for me. And it's not a processor hog.
Yay! It works! Makes it easier to read Youtube comments for sure without me stopping to shake my head, lol.
This is the first such profanity filter that I have tried that actually works as advertised. Thank you so much!
I really like this extension. I like reading the comments on news and opinion articles, but find myself distracted by the profanity some people use to express themselves. This extension reduces the distractions and helps me to focus on the message. It's a win-win.
This is the only profanity filter I've found for Chrome that actually works, and blocks all relevant words (and their gerund forms, etc!). Yay!
This seems to be the best profanity filter out there right now, but it needs just a little bit of improvement. I like the ability it has to filter profane parts of words, but let's just say that feature can be a little too... "assuming", if you catch my drift. It is a small issue, but I believe it would be easily fixed by adding all non-profane words in the dictionary as safe words, or simply adding the option for safe words.
Now I don't have to read morons' comments and listen to them spewing out one cuss word after another.
