You won't believe what I did with this Chrome extension after I started using it ... oh wait, yeah you would ... I sent a link for it to all of my link forwarding friends

Would be much improved if it could match case instead of always using sentence-case. Currently lower-case "literally" becomes "Figuratively". Would also benefit from an option to replace headlines only.

You haven't updated it in 2 years.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for allowing my sanity to return! The on/off feature is excellent so that if desired, I can wind myself up by reading crap in its original state just to remind me what life was like before this wonderful plugin entered my life.

DO NOT USE THIS EXTENSION ON A COMPUTER YOU WORK FROM. I installed this and forgot it was in place, and it replaced copy on a client's website, changing "best" to "most unexceptional." The client was, needless to say, less than pleased. This extension needs a warning right at the top to let you know it will affect any work done in the browser.

Didn't work for me. Didn't change anything in hyperbolic headlines, but did in things like product reviews and recipes. Not helpful.

Needs the ability to have this applied only on certain sites (such as Facebook) and ignore innocent bystanders from being affected.

Very nice when visiting any site littered with stupid headlines and bullshit clickbait, but the plugin has issues nonetheless. The plugin doesn't just work on the headlines, it works on general text as well. When looking for a best answer, visiting any site will change "best answer" to "Most unexceptional answer" and you may not even realize it unless you've been running downworthy for a long time and learn to recognize this. It aso affects emails.

As was pointed out, some pages freeze when this is on. Be sure to exclude those pages by going to the extension's settings and adding the url of that page/site

It was fun when it first was released, but some recent updates have made it too aggressive and it rewrites too many things.

Amazing idea, but doesn't do anything for me. For everyone complaining that it works on "all" websites, you shouldn't be using addons if you can't add websites to it's safe list.

Absolutely hilarious. Was on bbc bitesize and it said "This Is Our Bullshit Clickbait Version Of What Happens:"

I thought this would be fun. It is causing pages to NOT load and I can not figure out how to remove it, as it does not show up on my apps menu. NOT fun. Edit. I figured out how to get rid or it. It was on a different menu. Still don't like it.

The great fact is that Downworthy is not limited to just headlines. For example, sorting online marketplace results by "Best rating first" becomes, "Most Unexceptional Rating first," and the effects on unwitting users can be hilarious.

This is hilarious at first but if you use an application such as SalesForce to send emails, it will change your text so your client receives an unfortunate email that is nothing like what you intended (since single words are replaced). Don't use this on a computer where you will do any work, but its great for a good laugh.

Great concept but you need to exclude websites like yelp!

Its well entertaining but remember to turn it off if you need to get anything productive done :)

If it only worked on bombastic headlines, that'd be great and hilarious, but it replaces text on all websites in all locations on the page. That's dumb and useless.

ATTENTION this extension will cause some pages on chrome to freeze, like Quora's search, Google +, Linkedin. so I hope the developer will work on that, yet I think it don't work, I really didn't notice it at all.

I love the idea, but it disables Google Maps. That's a deal-breaker in my book.

Avi Kohn February 2nd, 2014

Very funny, but sometimes it's hard to know if the text has been changed. Please add an icon next to text that has been changed, or at least add (x) for the the number of times it was changed.

This is a hilarious extension, but for some reason it makes google+ (the webpage) freeze for me. I have tested this by uninstalling and installing it.

limeyrock January 29th, 2014

Would be 5 stars but it is far too "greedy", in that it converts everything, not just links, and not just from clickbait sites. A while/black list function and/or some markup-specific application (only converting text inside <a> tags maybe?). Keep up the good work! Another similar extension that I really Like is Cloud-to-butt, which replaces any and all mentions of "The Cloud" with "my butt".

Check plus. This could also be cool as a collaborative database to feed back into Privoxy or any border control device. Maybe you'd consider adding upstream submissions (highlight, click, submit) from us willful end users to build the ultimate anti-BS pattern database?

I've gotten so effing sick of all the clickbait, especially by Huffington Post, so this extension has made me quite happy. Thank you!

Cliff Weathers January 27th, 2014

Consider this extension a trojan horse. It will not only change what you read on a website, but what you say on a Web-based application. It changed something in a article I was editing from "amazing" to "pretty commonplace." This is not something you want on your computer.

Finally, a compromise solution between "social media blackout" and "persistent irritation." Hyperbole and metaphor have been excluded from this review.

I would leave a hyperbolically positive review, but that seems a little against the spirit of things. Real talk though, Upworthy & their click-bait nonsense drives me up a wall, and this extension is the PERFECT snarky solution to make me laugh. Well done!

Rhonda Lea Fries January 25th, 2014
Rhonda Lea Fries

Great fun, and a relief from the annoyance of relentless hyperbole. @Chris Smyth, you can toggle the extension for sites where the comments are affected. A one-star review is over-the-top for an issue that is easily resolved.

I downloaded this extension for a laugh, but what happened next was astonishing! No, really, this is a great extension that would be even better if it could change the linkbait headlines in Feedly as well.

Awesome! Feature request- replace "Will Stun You" with something appropriately snarky.

A Google User January 23rd, 2014

Apparently it can't tell what a headline is, and is hijacking comments on reddit. "Oh GOD This is SO Boring. Please Kill Me" is inserted before a good number of comments. It's really annoying.
