הכפתור הינו כלי חינמי אשר בעזרתו כל משתמש יוכל לקחת חלק במלחמה באלימות ברשת ובאמצעות לחיצה אחת לדווח לעמותת הכפתור האדום על ביטויים אלימים בהם הוא נתקל.
אופן פעולת הכפתור:
לאחר התקנת הכפתור האדום יופיע אייקון (כפתור אדום) לצד שורת הכתובת בדפדפן.
בעת החשיפה לביטוי אלים יש ללחוץ על הכפתור האדום , לחיצה על הכפתור האדום תצלם את מסך הדפדפן של המשתמש ובו הביטוי האלים , כמו כן תפתח חלונית הודעה אשר מודיעה על קליטת תמונת המסך ותאפשר למשתמש להוסיף תגובה לפני שליחת הדיווח.
לסיום הדיווח – על המשתמש ללחוץ על הכפתור "שלח" , הדיווח נשלח לעמותת הכפתור האדום באופן אנונימי לחלוטין ועובר סינון עפ"י חומרתו וטיפול בכל מקרה לגופו.
כלל הדיווחים אשר יטופלו ע"י עמותת הכפתור האדום יפורסמו ב"מדד הכפתור האדום" אשר ידרג את אתרי המדיה השונים מהם מגיעים הדיווחים לפי יחס הטיפול בדיווחים מתוך כלל הדיווחים המתקבלים.
