There is no user-notifying check for API service being down. Today (Feb 5 2015, CST) https://api.pinboard.in/v1/ is down, returns no failure (it is connection time out error). Extension behavior hides this fact. A user with API key already configured will not immediately notice that new bookmarks aren't being received. A new user will get generic login failure error, which looks like the API key is wrong; not revealing that API server is simply not answering. User FYI: This is also an oversight in Pinboard Plus (other author, likely paired with this) as of today.
