ClearBit started out pretty cool but like all technology companies, the truth slowly reveals itself. In this latest incarnation, the chrome extension asked for a permissions update: it can read data on all websites you visit. So, rather than just be sitting in Gmail and ingesting all your contacts so you can get access to theirs (give-to-get model) you now submit to sharing your browsing history with them. EVERY WEBSITE YOU VISIT. The tool has a blacklist for sites that it shouldn't show up on, but while you can prevent the thing from showing up on a web page as a little button in the top-right of the page, what prevents ClearBit from knowing each and every website you've visited? What a profile they can build on you. Disgusting.
